Hi. My son is playing at a rugby match tomorrow (25/1) at around 2pm in Northampton.
I am videoing the match so the coaches can analyse the game.
It has been suggested that a drone may be allowed to sit there and video the match (2 x 35min halves) to give a better perspective.
If this is ‘legal’, (and it is ok by nats as I have checked), is anyone interested?
My drone is not quite suitable!

How many people? Over a 1000 and you need to be 150m away
My drone is a freestyler / racer. Its not really built for hovering. It may be allowed if the coaches ok it with Northampton rugby club. They should be ok with it if they get a copy too. It’s just an opportunity for someone to practise something different, with permission, and for the clubs to get good video.
I should think there would be in between 100 and 300 people. Including the players!

It doesn’t really matter if you don’t video the whole game. That would be near impossible! Just some aerial footage would give a good perspective.

I think it could be off. Sorry Steve.
However… There is a crucial cup match on 08/02/20 in Leamington. This could be a go’er as its my lads home ground. I’ll keep you updated.

The possible.issue you will have legally is a safeguarding issue. You say your son so I assume these are children. The CAA might say it is Ok to do so but there are very strict laws with regards to filming children. These can be overcome though by informing all present that drone operations are taking place for training purposes. I was doing some work at St. George’s Park (England Football Training ground) and during a youth tournament there one of the teams had got clearance to fly inside the local airfield FRZ but was not allowed to fly due to safeguarding issue due to filming children. It wasn’t me doing the filming I must add, I was briefed by Staffs Police on the incident.

Having spoke to my Subject Matter Expert (the wife) she said most organisations who deal with children, will have an application form that parents have to fill in and it might have a section about permission for photography to be taken during the events. If you speak to the Club staff (including visiting clubs) and they say that they do and there have been no objections that will be your approval to fly. As long as you stick to the Drone Safe rules you should be fine. If you have a PfCo or someone with a PfCO volunteers to do the work you (or they) will have all of the ticks in the right boxes anyway. The main one is Insurance.

I’ve photographed local games where one snowflake has ticked the box for no photography so the whole game has become a no no.

Yeah. All parents have signed (including me). People video the matches every week anyway.
I was just trying to do the club a favour. If they pull h&s on me, they can whistle!
