As a newbie I’m a bit puzzled by NOTAMs.
Am I right in assuming that they are advice rather than instruction?
There’s a large drastic sounding NOTAM around the Isle of Wight and Portsmouth at the moment (military jets, fast and low, 0-2000ft) and yet I see light aircraft flying around the area.
Am I missing something? Do those pilots know something I can’t get from this app?
I played it safe and left the drone inside but wondered whether if I’d applied common sense (eg. 100 ft flying over land) I would have been ok?
Any thoughts/opinions welcome as to how you interpret these things.

99% of the time, yes.
However, the odd few are also Temporary Danger Areas (TDAs) which are the equivalent to a Flight Restriction Zone.
Nope, they use the same NOTAMs we do.
As mentioned, those are likely just warning notices rather than airspace restrictions.
Probably just experience. When you’ve read enough of them you’ll soon pick up the knack of determining the importance of them.
If ever in doubt don’t hesitate to post a question here with the details of the specific NOTAM in question and someone will shed more light on it for you – that’s what we’re all here for ![]()
