I only got my Potensic drone in October of last year, then the CAA announced new rules that have come into effect from the 1st Jan.
I know I’ve got two years to get the Remote ID device to fix to my drone (Potensic Atom), but can anyone really tell me why the need for the device? This will push the weight past 250g, the amount of time I will be flying per battery, will obviously now be lower considering I would need to use more power
Would I therefore need another thing certification, if I add the device?
Hi @there, it looks as though you’re quite new here ![]()
Why not nip over to the Introductions page, and say hello properly and tell us a bit about yourself. ![]()
I really wouldn’t worry about it , the CAA will more than likely kick the can down the road by then as they have lots of form for delaying , enjoy flying for now you have 2 years worth and by then I even if they do bring it in you will probably own another drone by then , why worry about something that might happen in 2 years time , just get out there and enjoy your flying.
Hence my Air 3S purchase. I might not be here in 2yrs time (or even tomorrow ).
Which Potensic drone?
Considering all DJI Mini drones from the 3 Pro and after have a RID module built in, I can’t see what’s stopping Potensic from doing the same unless it’s their equivalent cheap model - like the DJI Mini 4K - which doesn’t have RID.
Also since there’s no UK0/UK1 label on it, you don’t need it anyway.
The Atom 3-axis, which doesn’t have the RID, it needs an external module
What do you mean by re-certify, Rich? Do you mean the C rating (i.e. changing it to a C1 as it’s over the 250g limit)?
If so, afraid it’s not something you can do as the classification is certified by the manufacturer.
Given the model will be more than four years old by then, I doubt Potensic will be paying to reclassify it (and even if they did you’d almost certainly have to use whatever RID module they’ve certified it with), so you’d become an unclassified legacy drone categorised by weight.
Bear in mind, the C classifications won’t be recognised as their equivalent UK classifications anyway come 2028, so whether RID is built in or not, we’ll all be in the same boat (legacy and weight) with our current drones.
