Ive asked this in here as you guys will more likely have the answer.
I have a small 12V battery that came off my lawn tractor. Ive wired up a cigarette style charging outlet on it for charging my drone batteries while out and about. I am planning on being able to charge the 12V battery while driving but not quite sure on the best way. I was thinking on charging it from the cars 12V outlet, would i need to connect anything in between to regulate the current and/or voltage? I cant really run cables direct from battey as its a lease vehicle. Its a 30Ah if it makes any difference?
Get yourself a split charger (VSR). Basically, it charges the second battery when you are driving. But it also makes sure that it (1) doesn’t charge if the main battery is low, (2) only charges the second battery when it is low, and (3) doesn’t over charge the battery when it is full.
They do kits on Amazon and ebay, includes the split charger and all cables/terminals. They go from around £40 - £80. Durite is the best make, but I have also used the cheaper ones in the past with no issues.
I have one in my Evoque which charges my 12v 15Ah battery. This then powers a fused 4 way cigarette socket providing a constant 12V for charging my accessories (drone batteries, controllers, phone, etc.). I have used split chargers in all my camper builds too - but with much bigger leisure batteries.
This is my current setup …
Thanks for that @clinkadink . Having a look on amazon right now, cheers
