I work for a inspection company who is looking to put some inspectors through their GVC soonish, I also volunteer for a search and rescue team who may also be getting a drone. Because of this I thought maybe I’ll get a drone and get some experience so that when opportunities arise I get a head start, and more of a chance at getting to work with drones. So I need to get my first drone, I have been looking at the mini 5 pro, but is this a good beginners drone? and it’s quite expensive, so I have also been looking at the neo but I have seen quite a lot of people saying it’s very loud, will I get it and then not want to fly it because it’s to loud? And maybe there is a neo 2 on the way? For some reason I’m being put off the drones in-between because I’m thinking if I’m going for a mini I might aswell go for the 5 pro. Anyone got any advice? Really all I need it for is to gain some experience, but I would probably enjoy a bit of photography aswell? Hope this makes sense, thanks.
What’s your budget @Nw82 ?
The max I would wanna spend is about £800 which is why I can afford the mini 5 pro, but really as little as possible. ![]()
Neo will be next to useless for you , it’s a great companion drone (I have one) but needs a very still day and really good light to be of any use but fun.
Take a look for a used Mini 3 or even 4 Pro in that price range
If you want new then look at the Mini 4K on Amazon , chuck in some care refresh (essential) and you’ll get change out of £400
There are some fantastic bargains available in the For Sale & Wanted category at the moment ![]()
Given the current state of weight issues etc and considering your on a budget.
For light survey work with the minimal amount of fuss i’ld recommend the mini 4 with at least 3, ideally 6 batteries and one of those 65w in car fag lighter chargers. Maybe a powerbank for the controller
This will get you legally in the air and with the extra batteries you’ll be able to have your drone in the air 100% of the time. No waitng for stuff to charge.
For photography work the 5 is superior but not by that much. Worth thinking about if you want to keep outlays down.
Edit: for survey work. Prop guards are available for the 4, not the 5 afaik. Worth an extra £20
I forgot the shameless plugs
Leicester drones are a solid supplier and club discounts might apply.
Dji retail stores are also very good. They will activate your dji care at the till.
Lastly, to the best of my limited knowledge the buy n sell section of this forum has never let anyone down on 2nd hand kit.
Thanks everyone so far great advice, just to be clear the drone I want to buy is for me to have some experience and possibly do some photography. When I work for inspection i will use their drone once I’ve got GVC.
Sounds like a solid plan.
The 5 is nice n shiney for sure.
I’m happy with mine compared to the 4. I’m glad i got it. No doubt.
Which ever one you go for i would still recommend 3 batteries and the car charger.
For a first drone you’ll still have the same experience learning to fly with either. The 4 is cheaper both new and second hand right now.
Photo/videography wise there is a difference but not massively so for beginner use.
So i guess it comes down to how many pennies you want to part with. If your going to make is a big hobby and invest the time in the post production side then go for the 5. If not, the 4 won’t disappoint.
The club has fairly regular meet ups. Chances are if you make it to one you’ll get to chat and maybe fly or at least see fly, both models plus others.
For example. The havant meet down south tomorrow.
I’ll be doing the GVC in the next few months.
Mock exams tell me i might have a small chance of passing ![]()
Like others a mini 4 great as a starting drone. Dji do refurbished and probably get a new one. Recommend the 4 pro gets you 3 batteries and a screen tosee what the drone sees, better than your phone. Good luck
I’d get a second hand mini 3 pro or 4 pro as they are a lot cheaper now the 5 is out
Thanks again all, I can get the mini 4 pro with flymore for £623 and the mini 5 pro fly more for £783 both from Very. £160 difference?? Decisions decisions ![]()
Sod it..
Get the 5 ![]()
Either the 4 pro or the 5 pro would be good enough as a 1st drone. Make sure you get the version with the RC 2 controller, the controller where you use a phone is a bodge and should be avoided (IMHO).
Another advantage of the mini’s is them being relatively stealthy. When you are learning, you really don’t want an audience! LOL
For £160 difference, I’d go for the 5 Pro. The improved software, particularly the dynamic home point updating is great if you are filming while wandering about. (I always forget!)
So glad my wife don’t know the price of drones ![]()
. Thanks everyone I’ll let you know what I go for.
I’m not so sure! I use my mini 2 se with an 11 inch iPad and my 4 pro with the rc2. The iPad is far easier to see. And I don Keep accidentally keep switching out of fly mode with my clumsy hands.
Actually, I agree with you about the screen brightness (dimness?) on the RC controllers, which is why I’ll be getting the bodged screenless controller when I eventually buy a Mini 5 Pro! ![]()
With the money I save, I’ll buy an RC Pro 2 controller which everyone on YouTube seems to love for the very bright large screen. ![]()
There’s an old joke involving guitars, motorbikes, bows, drones, etc, etc. Only the subject of the joke changes.
Husband: "my biggest fear is that when I die, my wife will sell my guitar for what I told her it cost!
