Clarification on stick controls

I just downloaded the how to analyse crashes pdf. Great doc but on one example it says if you hold the down the left stick, the motors will switch off. So how do you bring it down? Do you need to do this in steps? Down a bit, let go, down a bit more, let go? Did I just get luck yesterday when I brought it down. I thought I’d just held the left down stick until it was a few feet and then from about 4 ft held it down again.

The motors will only switch off if it’s on the ground.

Don’t worry your not going to switch them off mid flight.

It used to be you could emergency shut off the motors mid flight by holding both sticks down and inwards but on modern firmwares this only works if the drone has a critical error.
