> # New Feature 🥳

### • Local Authority / Council Byelaws and Policies

Those of you who have been around for a while will remember that [back in June 2021](https://greyarro.ws/t/the-development-of-drone-scene-continues/12214/342) we launched a new feature which allowed you to look up the byelaws that a local authority / council might have in place that could affect your ability to fly.

While local authorities are slow to move, they do from time to time change their policies or introduce / update byelaws.

Trying to find the byelaw for a given LA can be very time consuming, all their web sites are different, none of their search boxes work properly, they all have dead links, and so on.

So we’ve made it really easy for you to find if a local authority has a byelaw, and if so, the details of that byelaw, and / or any polices they may have.

To that end, Grey Arrows Drone Club submitted 379x Freedom of Information requests to local authorities across England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.

We’ve got around 50% of the results back in, and the rest are due in within the next couple of weeks so now is a good time to release this updated capability.

To find out if a LA has a byelaw or policy, simply click on the “question mark” button on the map.

Clicking on this will clear all your current layers off the map (don’t worry, we put them back again later!).

You can then click _anywhere_ on the map to see which local authority is responsible for that area. The boundary of the council will be displayed on the map in very high detail:

 ![Screenshot 2024-03-29 at 15.09.59](https://d1q8cepst0v8xp.cloudfront.net/original/3X/3/0/3060cd23b527f616fe60f1ff2b79de3328657685.png)

If you then click on the displayed boundary you’ll get a popup info box that will tell you which local authority is responsible for this area:

 ![DroneScene2](https://d1q8cepst0v8xp.cloudfront.net/original/3X/5/a/5a5fad42d640aeb45b0027b71dc11c2d071ca5c6.png)

If you click on the _“What do they know?”_ link in the info box as if by magic a new tab will open in your browser and you’ll be whisked over to the Freedom of Information (FOI) results for that authority.

 ![Screenshot 2024-03-28 at 20.58.36](https://d1q8cepst0v8xp.cloudfront.net/original/3X/0/b/0b27dfc1e465c3ad5245a94e980401345887603c.png)

You might notice some FOI requests with a status of _“ **did not have** the information requested”_ response, eg:

[![](https://d1q8cepst0v8xp.cloudfront.net/original/3X/3/0/30f3907351774a9f7e4dbd1a0f6fbdd7c394e54c.png) ](https://d1q8cepst0v8xp.cloudfront.net/original/3X/3/0/30f3907351774a9f7e4dbd1a0f6fbdd7c394e54c.png)

This is more often than not because they don’t actually have a byelaw or policy, so they can’t provide any details.

> Therefore, _ **please don’t read the red colour as meaning you can’t fly there** _, it is probably the exact opposite.

### • Opt out of posting to the forum

When you click to say you _have_ flown somewhere, or when you click to say you _want_ to fly somewhere, Drone Scene automatically makes a post to the forum on your behalf.

This has surprised a few people as they didn’t know it was going to happen.

We’ve now added the option for you to _not_ announce your intentions to the world 😊

You’ll now find a new tick-box on the `Have you flown here?` and on the `Do you want to fly here` buttons:

> # UI / UX Change 🖥

### • Added the name of the location to the TOAL and Parking markers

Drone Scene will display Take Off And Landing (TOAL) and Parking markers for locations where people have added the extra information.

However, if the location you were viewing was near to another location, it wasn’t always clear which location the markers were attached to.

We’ve made a minor change to now include the name of the location in the header of the marker details:

what no bugs to fix… not even the standard

“fixed some bugs” statement that is a must have with drone software and firmware updated

come on there must be one… at least one you don’t want to tell us about… but leave us all guessing… part of the mystery of drone ownership

seriously: thanks and much appreciated

This is very useful!
I looked at North Devon and there are no bylaws from your FOI request, but there guidelines as below. So are guidelines literally what they would like you to do, but without a bylaw they can only advise you to follow their guidelines? It’s really only the getting permission and approval from the council that could be a problem. This would relate to a sub 250g drone.
Thank you for this resource.

Any pilot/company wishing to film or take off/land on council land or property must:

- get permission and approval from the council first for the filming
- have appropriate permission from the [CAA](https://www.caa.co.uk/consumers/remotely-piloted-aircraft/register-to-fly-a-drone-or-model-aircraft/) for your use and be able to provide proof of this
- provide an up-to-date copy of their public liability insurance
- carry out a site assessment in advance
- make sure the area is safe at all times whilst using the drone
- comply with the current CAA Air Navigation Order and the current Drone Code
- indemnify the council against any injury or damage caused
- have in place suitable secure arrangements for the handling of personal data captured

@geoff Most Councils have similar Policies Geoff, including my own, as they seem to copy from each other.

They have no real ‘teeth’ and mean very little as enforcement is near impossible. Stay respectful and subtle with your flights and you’ll be fine. 👍

I wish all our work system updates and installs had comprehensive documentation like this one.
Very well laid out communicating all updates and explaining the how’s and why’s.
Thanks for taking such time on this.
