Drones on P&O / Cunard cruise ships

For some reason I’m reminded of this…

Can see how they would ban them due to potential damage to radar or comms masts.

Flew mines once of a research ship i was working on and had to sign disclaimer that any damage caused to the ship (mostly comms masts and dome) or the ship having to return to port early i would have to foot the bill.
Captain just asked that i kept it higher than the drilling derrick or below main deck height

Back in April of 2024 myself and another flyer were down by the Solent to meet the new Cunard vessel Queen Anne as she headed up to Southampton on her inaugural visit. Just before we took off a guy approached us wearing a Cunard branded jacket and warned us of counter-drone tech that was fitted to the ship. We laughed it off thinking he was having a joke and up the birds went… As I neared her bow the screen on my RC2 totally pixelated and I lost all transmission for what seemed an eternity at the time. not even an emergency press of the RTH button seemed to work and I was sure the drone was going into the drink!. I was flying much closer to the vessel than the other guy was but he too experienced interference…

Thankfully I was able to re-establish comms with the drone and brought her back safely. Sadly now I no longer have the Airdata for that flight but it made for interesting reading due to the number of signal blocks/failures.. Was the guy who we laughed off his comments actually telling the truth!? I’ve flown around Queen Anne since but I’ve been reluctant to get as close as I did first time around.

I went on a cruise to. Norway, I couldn’t take my drone, my bags were x-rayed at the port before getting on the boat.

If you lost all transmission how would you expect the rth button to work?

Indeed but in a panic wouldn’t you start pushing any buttons to try and get a response!

No, I’d give it five minutes before getting concerned.

Each to their own. :+1:

You’d wait for five minutes after complete loss of control (over water, none the less) before pressing the RTH? I’d give that ten seconds, maybe fifteen. :scream:

I never once mentioned 5 minutes? @Edison did. :slightly_smiling_face:

It was me that said that and yes, if I had no control and could see it hovering I’d give it five minutes, within that time auto rth should be activated.

If all transmission was lost as stated pressing rth is not going to do anything.

Yeah, sorry… definitely didn’t mean the reply to be to you

I’d have rebooted the controller at least twice in those five minutes

Similar thing happened to one of the guys i worked with on the ship couple of years before i joined.
The ship was in Kristiansand Norway and he decided to fly around the port although he new he was in an area he said was “grey area” due to radar mast and coastguard base nearby, think it would have been around 2019/2020 i think, he said he got an error about interference then kept flying he said it was almost like someone else had eventually taken control and ditched it in the harbour because he hadnt returned to home with 1st warning

Virgin put bags through small x-ray machines as you board, they don’t rely on the ports checking.

Just a note to all contacted P&O today to clarify all comments

Dear Mr xxxxxx

Thank you for reaching out to us today regarding the use of your drone on board.

We are pleased to inform you that guests are now allowed to bring drones on board. However, please note that drones must not be flown from the ship or in the vicinity of the ship when being used while ashore.

When you are on land, it is important to comply with local regulations regarding drone usage.

As a guest, you are responsible for understanding and adhering to any restrictions that may be in place in the locations we visit.

We hope you have a wonderful time on board the Britannia!

Kind regards,

Ewa

I got the same reply. How did you get on with Barbados? After looking at each destination on the cruise (Arvia Jan j I’d need permission registration for half the port calls, thinking it’s too much hassle?

Ports can be funny places and not in a laughable sense. I can image many foreign ports having some draconian laws when it comes to drones given they are essential for a countries trade.

To clarify I do mean the islands and their corresponding countries. Some , like British Virgin Islands come under uk foreign laws and need another registration. Some like Barbados need an application in person 2 weeks beforehand.etc etc

Thanks for the update. I have had the reply the same from P&O so ive tried to contact the CAA Barbados and have no reply. Hopefully i can sort something out when im out there. Only one worry is por customs when coming back to the ship each day
