Thank you

Really nice, John. Especially love the detail in the night footage.

At the risk of bringing on the wrath of the whatever from high atop the thing, dare I ask how you maintained VLOS? I’m not assuming you didn’t (and if you didn’t, it’s all good - you do you and we won’t tell the man)… it’s just that I know I can be an overly-cautious flyer and have definitely discounted flights in the past (including right there in Edinburgh) because I couldn’t figure out how to dot the i’s and cross the t’s. Am I missing the ideal TOAL?

I will be honest for a few. Seconds it did drop out of los due to the castle and signal dropped but didn’t interfere with the flight . I took off from the esplanade as the castle was closed .and If I had been challenged I just needed to walk 20m max and I would be on public land and out with historic Scotland’s land.
The only way around it would be If I took off from the actual castle ground which I wouldn’t be allowed due to there policy…
Yes it was a fine line flight…

Ps you will see the signal drop didn’t affect the flight , as the flight is continues with no lag in the flight. I used the mini 4 pro and as it used Oc4. i doubt If I had used a mini 3 pro it would have struggled.

Ah, I’ve walked up as far as the top of Lawnmarket looking for a good spot, but it was in the day and the sheer number of tourists ambling about put me off (just being there, let alone flying a drone). Timing is everything, I guess

I sometimes frustrate myself with my inability to get too close to that line. Better now than I was a few years ago, but that nervous feeling in my gut still wins out some days.

Comes down to experience and reading the location and weather conditions.
I used netweather app for weather and wind strength, type in post code and it gives an accurate weather conditions. Hence all my drone footage is alway good/fair.

Lol giving away all my secrets here.
I’ve clocked up over 1300km having had 6 different models of DJI drones at present I have a Mavic 3 & mini 4 pro both well capable of most weather conditions.

Given I’ve been flying drones for six years now, I’ve an embarrassingly low total distance (let’s just say it’ll take me a good long while yet to get a long haul badge). That’s what comes of crap eyesight and a constant sense of impending catastrophe!

Joe I am 63 yes old who had a torn retina in one eye. Ex HM forces sniper.
Trust your skills and judgement and your trust in DJI drones, ps recommend mini 4 pro for a good/special drone.

Both videos in this post where taken 10mins gap between flights on the same day.
Max height in the video was 114m

We’ve just been booked to film a wedding at Greyfriars Hall in the Cowgate next August during the Fringe and the couple asked, so will you be able to get some drone footage then? You can hardly find space to walk in the Cowgate during August never mind fly a drone :joy:
