File Index Mode - keeping file numbering sequence

I want to maintain file numbering after deleting transferred files to computer, it seems manual deletion from the PC is the best option rather than doing a reformat, any suggestions please?
Keeping the last file without deleting it

Personally I am not bothered what the drone calls them, when I transfer them I always run ā€˜Better File Rename’ on my Macs, I’m sure windows has similar tools.

I have it set to auto open on SD card insertion, takes seconds to do

I keep my mine in project folders then rename - longdate_number - format

I too dont mind what the drone calls the files as long as everything has a date and time on them I dump them into a folder that will have the event name or where it is and a date against it and that folder will be in a yearly folder and in the event / subject folder there will be a breakdown of Video / photos / pano / controller then when it comes to finding stuff I can just search on the event/ subject folder name and then go and find the date I want.

Leave the drone to do its thing with file names.

A bit like Chris, I run a specific setup of Bulk Rename Utility (Windows - free) to change the typical DJI_0116.? file names to yyyymmddhhmmss_DJI_0116.? .. where ? is JPG/DNG/MP4/MOV

Bulk Rename Utility will extract the date time from the exif ā€œMedia Createdā€ value.

Hi, I’m not too sure about what you are trying to do but I use a windows prog called Flash Renamer. It’s long in the tooth but runs without a hitch on Windows 11 and copes with any renaming, numbering that you can imagine. Softonic has it for download but don’t let other sites try to make you pay —it’s free.

I’ll admit that I do this. Mostly because I’m not great at organising stuff on the PC, so it helps make sure I don’t get conflicts when offloading into the general dumping ground.

However, for yet another (free) option for renaming files on Windows, I use One Commander which is an excellent file explorer that also has a comprehensive renaming function tucked away in it.

I use Faststone Image Viewer, it’s file importer has plenty of rename features. Used to use Bulk Rename Utility which is great but I find Faststone a better all-in-one importer & viewer.

I used to leave the highest numbered file on the SD card but once I got my head round the files being sequenced by date and not number, it was far less hassle.
