Friargate bridge Derby made by Andrew Handyside in 1878

n this video I have used video I have taken on 13th June 2026 and I have lined it up with various photographs that I took of the bridge many years ago before the safety netting was installed in 2010 when it wasn’t in such bad condition. I have then used A.I. to clean up the photos to remove rust and dirt to simulate how this bridge could look after restoration work.

I think people have forgotten just how stunning this bridge once was. Having been left to rot for many decades.

I have been photographing this bridge for 25 years so I do remember how nice it looked back in 2001 but time has taken its toll on the abandoned bridge and since the safety netting was installed in December 2010 all the lovely cast ironwork has been hidden away from view.

I have been researching the work of Handyside or 19 years and have found hundreds of items around the world. They built over 800 bridges, 450 in London, 320 in India, loads in Denmark, Italy, Russia, Norway, Africa etc.
