Hayling Bridges

I got up at sparrow fart in order to give my mate a lift to the station to catch the Gatwick Express. The weather forecast was good, the wind speeds low. And the supermarket on the way home doesn’t open till 08:00. So, reluctantly, I had to find some way of passing the time before I could do anything useful.

This image is above the Hayling end of the Hayling Billy line which closed in 1963,the piers and turtsble base of the bridge are still visible. The expense of necessary repairs to the bridge, coupled with Dr. Beeching’s stringent cuts to the national rail network was the reason for the closure of the line.

It is now a well maintained cycle and walking trail, running south to the old station buildings. If you don’t fancy having to retrace your steps when you reach the station (now a theatre) a bus runs every half hour that will bring you back to your starting point

The Island is linked to the mainland by a road bridge which is the only way on and off, sunny days in the summer season can cause some long delays at peak times. If you fancy flying here check out the link I posted on Drone Scene nearly 6 years ago - updated with parking and take off markers. There is a small, hard wooden bench there also the petrol station across the very busy main road does some snack food and cold and hot drinks.

A glance at the traffic on the bridge shows why it wasn’t going to win any prizes in the RTF Moving Vehicles Challenge :frowning:

The original crossing to Hayling Island was the Wadeway, directly below the drone. as the name suggests, it was wet, even at low tide.

A brief article on all three crossings is here

A detailed archaeological evaluation of the Wadeway is here
