Introduction & Seeking Advice from the USA

I don’t have a screenshot at the moment, but I’ll go back and figure out which map I found it on. It’s in the area of Boscastle north of Tintagel. It wasn’t in a red restricted zone. It mentions something about the seabirds, wildlife, etc. I’m totally subscribed to the idea of not disturbing wildlife so obviously I’m not going to be any nusiance flying. But I also don’t see a lot of flying locations that others have plotted on the map in that costal region. I know there are a couple RAF bases along that coast and know to check for NOTAMs before flying, but the general lack of people adding sites to the map give me the impression this is may be a no-fly, or not-worth-it-to-try zone.

Just had a quick look, there are lots of SSSI, Sights of Special Scientific Interest. Most will not concern us as they’ll be for rock formations, plants etc. Some may be for seal colonies or birds, I’d need to spend a little more time getting more info. I’d really recommend, if you haven’t done so already, paying for membership so you can get access to Dronescene. It is the absolute best resource you can get for drone flying in the UK.
In Dronescene I see this

Lots of SSSI’s, click on any one of them and you’ll see this

Then, clicking the blue links underneath will take you to other places where you will find out why it is a designated SSSI, and that is where you’ll find out if it is a place to fly, or not. The vast majority will be good. And once you get your shots, you can add them to Dronescene for us as places recommended to fly

Yes, I’m upgrading my membership to paid today. Great info. The two maps I’ve been looking at have been Drone map which shows the SSSI and SAC notes. When I look at Drone Scene map right now I can only see spots where people have added their flights and there are none in the area of Tintage or Boscastle so wasn’t sure what to make of that. I’ll be updrading my membership and maybe all will be revealed and make more sense. So basically the SSSI areas you CAN fly, you just need to use common sense?

Pretty much!!!
If there is a colony of breeding seals, don’t fly low/close enough to make them move and abandon their pups. If there are nesting birds don’t get close enough to scare them off their nests or stop them returning to them. If you do upset any wildlife then pack up the drone and put it away, it’s all about “not being a dick” One thing you do have to be aware of is the trespass laws those pesky english and welsh people have come up with. You will need to find areas to TOAL that are on public land. If you TOAL from private land you might be asked to leave by the landowner or their representative, and if you are, then you pretty much have to comply. But as long as you do comply, nothing can come from it, just smile and say sorry, no harm done and no offence comitted. We, up here, in bonny bonny Jock land, have a different view. Our countryside is there for everyone to enjoy. And as long as you don’t take off from someones garden you’re pretty much good to go.

Homestly, I’m not just saying this because I am a member, but Dronescene is the ONLY resource you will need in the UK. Plus you will have pretty much immediate answers to all of your questions through the legal/privacy section

Thanks for the counsel  Yes, I’m aware of TOAL issues. I’d never seen the TOAL acronym until I joined this site and at first I was like . But duh…Take Off And Land. I’ve never seen it used in the US.

I’m a new flyer but up til a year ago, I had lived on the North Cornwall coast for a couple of decades. It’s stunning but incredibly windy most days of the year. Your best bet in summer will be very early in the morning before the onshore breeze kicks in.

If you want local information on the loveliest places to visit then feel free to DM me.

Sorry, should have added that I have wondered about flying there and enquired about the NOTAM. The floor is 5000’.

However, there is quite a lot of low military activity, and I was told to ring the Military Low Altitude Cell number on 01489 443133 to notify of them of my flying plans, but I have yet to do so and don’t know how much notice you need to give them. As I said, new flyer.

Quite a bit of UK airspace is Class D and used for low flight practise and other training by the MOD and RAF. But I can’t see any Class D airspace or any NOTAMS in that area?

I saw it on NATS, so I rang them. On Drone Scene it is marked as a DJI Enhanced Warning Zone. I saw a big red thing on the map so I thought I’d better ring them to find out about it. Apologies for getting the terminology wrong, I was very early on in learning the rules when I rang them.

I was enquiring about the stretch, Crackington up to Morwenstow, just N of Boscastle, my old daily walking area, much of which is on the edge of it/just under the edge of South West Complex (it’s an imaginary line over the MHW mark), if you are taking off from the foreshore. Jets come over Widemouth very low at times, and there is lot of helicopter traffic too.

If you don’t know the area, it’s sensitive, because GCHQ Bude is to the north at Cleave, and many comms cables come in at Widemouth. It’ll be one of the first places to get nuked.

The chap I spoke to on the phone though just said 'tell them about your flight, and they’ll add it to our deconfliction system".

Good afternoon, fellow a American cousin yank here. I’m looking to make my Mavic Pro M1P truly mine and prevent any Chinese data collection. I found this site while researching how to jailbreak and block all the unwanted software on my drone. I’ve been flying drones since 2005, but my Mavic Pro has been grounded since 2017, when I ran some cyber tools to track where my data was going. It’s been sitting in a box ever since, with the exception of one time in 2018 when I used it to take out a hornet’s nest in an oak tree in my backyard. It was a great experience watching the giant hornets get sucked into the prop wash, one after another chopped into bits. It was more entertaining than sitting around drinking beer and watching a bug zapper at night.

Anyway, enough of that. I’m just looking to make my drone truly mine and not a tool for Chinese reconnaissance data collection tool for some Chinese communist’s pricks that need an to be nuked into oblivion. Apologies I spent 15+ years of my life shooting terrorist in the face in a desert and I hate communist china so I lack a filter and I love free speech.

You’ve got a few options

Use the Litchi app instead of GO4.

Use an air-gapped device to run GO4, it doesn’t need the internet.

Install a firewall on the device you use GO4 with and block its internet routing.

Roll your own custom GO4 app, with all the DJI API domain name endpoints nullified in the source code before compiling:

Probably more options, we’ll help where we can
