Fairly new to this; decided I needed a hobby when I retired and this appealed to my technical side and my unfulfilled fantasy of being a pilot. I was a radar mechanic in the RAF many years ago. Currently have two airworthy Hubsan H501s and an Ifly 4s which I am in the process of severely modifying. All have GPS, and the Ifly will get a brushless gimbal shortly. It’s a steep learning curve…
Desperate for somewhere to fly regularly in the Wymondham to Dereham area, as I need the practice. Considering A2CofC or Article 16 as next step in perhaps something a bit commercial.
I welcome any contact with members.
*Hello. It wouldn’t let me say ‘Hello from Norfolk’
Have you seen our members map? (Click the burger-menu in the top right) You may find some pilots living near you. Feel free to add yourself to the members map too
We’re a well established club with many knowledgable members so it’s very likely that any issues you come across will have been discussed here before. Hello , welcome to GADC, always good to welcome yet another Norfolk flyer, there are quite a few of us now , probably time we organised a Norfolk meet and social some time. I think @milkmanchris has already covered most in his reply and I’m sure you will enjoy being part of GADC as all the members are truly fantastic and always willing to share their knowledge, the little search icon top right can be extremely helpful to find answers to previous topics too. Anyway enjoy and have fun .
No scottydog was my nickname at school and it kind of stuck , Norfolk boy born and bread and the family always has been for as far back as I could trace . Yes hopefully we can all get to meet up as there are lots of Norfolk members
Welcome oldnick…I served in the Navy…but not on the ships…more land based…and more up in Scotland…now at the end of the year it’s all change… at the moment UAV’s under 250g can be flown in the A1 sub category (there are also some exceptions for uav’s up to 500g too).
UAV’s less than 2kg can be flown in A2 sub category, but you must keep at least 50 meters away from people and pass the A2 theory exam (A2 Certificate of Competency or ‘A2 CofC’). If you have not passed the A2 theory exam, you may only fly these drones in the A3 subcategory.
UAV’s of 2kg or greater may only be flown in the A3 subcategory.
After 1 January 2023, you can continue to fly a ‘legacy’ unmarked UAV in the following categories:
UAV under 250g can continue to be flown in the A1 sub category.
All other drones must only be used in the A3 sub category. Also
From 1 January 2023 new UAV’s will have to meet a set of product standards, and some may do before this date. These will be classed from C0 to C4, based on the weight and capability of the UAV and will determine how and where you can fly.
UAV’s classed C0 or C1 can be flown in the open A1 sub category
UAV’s classed C2 can be flown in the A2 or A3 sub category - but if flying in ‘A2’ you must pass the A2 theory exam (A2 Certificate of Competency or ‘A2 CofC’)
UAV’s classed as C3 and C4 can only be flown in the A3 sub category
Food for thought on weather you go A2CofC or Article 16
Hi, thanks for the detailed info! I had previously looked most of this up, in fact, and come to the conclusion that Article 16, with insurance, was probably a good idea until I get A2CofC. I’m now registered with FPVUK, as frequently suggested on GA…which means I can overfly people at 30m altitude and fly right up to buildings.
Worked with some of your lot when Lossiemouth was RNAS. I was at Kinloss. There seem to be plenty of ex-servicepersons here - great!
My farther was an ammunition technician in the bomb dump at RAF Kinloss…I went to Forres primary then to Forres Academy and us kids cycled often from Kinloss to Findhorn and Burghead…those were the days…late 60’s…young and carefree…the world has changed a lot since then….I was stationed at Arbroath
Hi Fairtrainfx,
I remember being under suspicion by the snowdrops when an enterprising soul cut his way into the bomb dump around 1970, apparently looking for gulls’ eggs ( a saleable item then). Wasn’t me!
You are so damn right about the world changing! Far too fast, and in the wrong directions entirely, IMO
Yep those pesk snowdrops were a pain in the bum…poking there noses in all the time…my dad used to run the gun club whilst at Kinloss…used to rear baby pheasants and grouse …I used to go picking chick weed…we put them out in pens as they got older then released them…after tagging them…wasn’t often you shot any off those we reared…but we used to shot rabbits and hares, geese …there was a massive pond that was inhabited by all sorts of birds…and we used to Wade through the oggin to get duck egg…gulls and goose…we had to let the snowdrops know as if not they would come charging in…
Never joined the gun club, but used to shoot rabbits on nearby farms. Also used to spend cold dark hours in Findhorn Bay waiting for duck that never came…wish I’d known about your pond!
