Applied for the period 8th - 31 Dec, Blackpool South Shore . Well chuffed.
Blackpool ATC have a great reputation on here, they’ve never caused anyone any problems and have always been very accommodating to drones.
Credit where due and all that
Any hints & tips?!?
I’m inside Newcastle Airport’s zone and would love to just check my own roof.
Registered with airportal, need to supply make, model & serial no & max take off weight Of your drone, your op & flyer id. and followed the process. They ask for dates, times, reason and what drone you’ll be flying. I gave a period of around a month to allow for weather as for times I put 9 - 7:30 (for no real reason really other than gave me plenty of scope to get some flying in). You then get an approval (in principle)/or not. When you’d like to fly you contact the atc with your intended time (you will likely need to be a bit flexible dependent on air traffic), once agreed you need to “activate “, your flight plan. When finished you re contact atc to let them know and de-activate your flight plan. You do this for all your intended flights. It’s a lot simpler than it sounds.
When I first got my drone I contacted the local atc to ask procedure for flying within the frz. And if I needed permission to fly if keeping to a set low altitude say for instance 30m. They replied that if I intended flying above roof level I needed to request permission via air portal. Blackpool is only a small airport and no longer has commercial tourist flights, however the support helicopters for the Irish Sea rigs fly from there, as do air ambulance and red arrows / battle of Britain flight when in area. It also has a busy air club. And they all pass over my house sometimes I reckon below 200 ft. I have looked up from my back garden to be met with the sight of the nose cone of a hawker jet or whatever it is they use these days, pointing straight at me as the arrows do their usual bomb burst whenever they arrive at the airport.
Useful stuff - thank you.
I guess NCL is busier with commercial stuff but it’s down as one of my New Year resolutions!
I have registered with Teesside airport and they are always very helpful whenever I request to fly inside the frz.
