Laptop spec for £700 budget?

That’s what I own, the Omen 17 (2019). Marvellous. I have an external 500gb NVMe running off the thunderbolt port for my proxies /scratch disk, and upgraded to 32gb ram. Running Davinci resolve, I’m really impressed with the rendering speed (4k 60fps, h265).
I’ve tried using Topaz labs AI video, and that took 24hrs:rofl::rofl::rofl:. Maybe pushing it a tad too far:thinking::rofl:.
But otherwise great laptop👍
Runs Prem pro fine too.

I got mine custom made by PC specialist’s, you chose the base setup and then add your specs to mske it better, the stuff you get from curry’s or pc world is shite. If you cant getcwhat y I u require just go for a gamers PC, mines is suitable for running Adobe premiere pro & photoshop simultaneously and still asks for more.
Im able to process all my 4k videos on it.
Admittedly i paid over £1600 , butcsaved around £600 on shelf products

Their decent, PC specialists. I had a Desktop made up for us, gotta be 20yrs ago :+1:

I use a standard Acer laptop with i7 - 10th generation.

Gets through all the 4K high-bitrate video editing very happily.

That was £800 from Argos two-and-a-half years ago.

I did mine myself, but admittedly, I use to sell them in the PC boom back in the '90s. Tottenham Court Road computer fair, them were the days.

Thanks for all your help…

Some of you suggested desktop setups but unfortunately as much as a desktop would be my preferred option i have to get a laptop due to lack of space with living in a small bungalow

Cheers people

It depends on the context. But in this one it means “fuck me!!!” Not literally of course!

You can cram a hell of a lot of hardware into a small form factor nowadays. I built a dedicated ‘VR PC’ for my Valve Index located in the lounge (had to pass the mrs test). I used the SilverStone SST-RVZ02B ultra slim case. It was the same size as a games console, but very quick.

It had an AMD Ryzen 7 2700X, Asus GTX 1070 Ti 8GB CERBERUS, 16GB RAM, 1TB SSD and a 650w Corsair PSU.

The other consideration worth mentioning, is that PCs are completely upgradable, whereas laptops are not - bar memory and storage (and on some, even that is now soldered to the mobo). So come upgrade time, laptops are expensive.

If you want a custom built pc, pm me. Happy to help a fellow GADC’r at cost value + courier costs.

If your heart is still set on a laptop, good luck. Loads of good examples in this thread :+1:

Need that for some of my crazy Davinci shizzle.

Can’t beat a computer fair, first I built from a fair was an AMD K6 with a 4gb fireball hard drive and the linked graphics cards of a Matrox Mystique and a Voodoo LOL Ahhh the good old days

I have an ASUS TUF laptop, Ryzen R7, 32Gb RAM, SSD’s and a 6GB Nvidia card cost about a grand 3 years ago and has been upgraded a few times since, now pretty much maxed out. It’s doing a great job of photo editing and handling the 4k video from the mini 3 pro. But really go for a decent set up, new Ryzen R5, 7 or 9, or Intel i5, i7 or i9 a late a model as you can, at least 16gb RAM (it can always be upgraded) and SSD drives, graphics card price are astronomical at the moment so go for at least 6Gb. As a laptop editor I have to go for a 17" screen, but have recently cheated and stuck a 29" 4k monitor over the laptop on an arm for ease of use

££££s🤣

Very close to what I had, circa '97 ish. I had the Matrox Mystique and my bro had the 3DX Voodoo. Ground breaking in their day, especially with Quake and Duke Nukem  Also remember getting my hands on a 4GB Bigfoot, a 5.25" HDD … and recall thinking, “I’ll never fill this!”.

Nice! NVMe Gen 4’s transfer rates are amazing. Makes conventional SSDs seems like old HDDs.

All this geekery takes me back to counting frame and refresh rates in Doom.

I still don’t see what the point of super fast kit if your running a shit OS on it :person_shrugging:

Back on topic as this desktop talk is no good if he doesn’t have a suitable desk to plonk a monitor etc on permanently.

The laptop looks ok on paper. But buy online (don’t do click and collect as it doesn’t give you 14 day cooling off period) and then you’ve got 14 days to put it through its paces. If it ain’t up to the job send it back as not suitable and factory reset it.

There is a 16GB version that’s £100 more from Argos if you don’t want to risk any potential warranty issues down the line.

There’s a couple of user reviews with screen bleed issues. So look out for that.

My only criticism which you wouldn’t be able to solve with the budget is the screen, which you shouldn’t potentially overlook if you’re working with high quality images and 4K video. If it’s the type of content you’re working with it kind of makes sense to have a display that supports it.
