Let’s Edit: Is This Photo Worth The Effort?

Picture is a bit busy for me and unfortunately not a great sky so I’d crop it to the interesting bits. Done all adjustments on iPhone so probably much better with PhotoShop on a real computer but you get the idea….
Love the idea of this as I’m still experimenting with the best angles from an aerial platform.

Is there a RAW version of this image?

I’m not sure if I actually did end up binning ( this particular shot ) @Drumsagard John, however I took quite a few shots of the bridge so I’m sure I’ll have a copy “ call it if you will “, I can post them here for you & anyone else who wants to have a crack I’ll post them after breakfast :+1:

Heres the original intended picture " for railway architecture " which I couldn’t get to grips with the sky, which resulted in replacing the sky Here as I gave up on it & then tried with another picture the first picture in this thread, sorry yes have binned the one above but same place same day just closer up etc, here’s the Raw’s
DJI_0930.DNG (31.0 MB)
DJI_0931.DNG (31.0 MB)
DJI_0932.DNG (31.1 MB)
DJI_0933.DNG (30.9 MB)
DJI_0934.DNG (31.0 MB)

This gives a similar effect to my base adjustment I make in Photoshop for most of my images. The beauty of mine is that you can do it at any point for a bit of boost, but I find it works best as a starting point.

Once the image is open…

switch to channels
Ctrl + Left click the RGB channel (if not turned off you’ll see the ‘marching ants’)
Switch back to layers
Ctrl +C and then Ctrl +V which will paste the selection to a new layer
click the new layer to select it and change the blend. I find the two that work best are Overlay or Soft Light - adjust opacity to suit.
rinse and repeat as many times as you like…

BTW - good idea to help folks understand edits, etc. Not sure I’ll be able to join in but wanted to share my short and quick tip.

NO
Sorry don’t like that sorta thing. Overworked. :grimacing:

I clicked on what I thought was the “original Image” link and it looked as though it had been ‘tweaked’ a bit already.
It’s quite a striking landscape and so far every additional adjustment has not added much to it.
I find the white splashes on the arches to be distracting … and the light through the first arch on the left just weird.
A crop would be useful I guess but I think the photographer needs to have a dialogue with him/herself as to what the photograph is about.
The house is compositionally sat in a strong position and the viaduct leads towards it.
Go back to the RAW file and briefly convert to black and white to help you decide what are the compositional strengths (or weaknesses) of the image.
You could make half a dozen different pictures from this one.
None are “Right” but one may appeal to you more than any other.
The photographer should decide and stick by their own choices, it’s subjective and the photographer should not give up their vision.

(BTW I have been a pro photographer for 50+ years and have this discussion with myself on a weekly basis )

Great commentary - some really lovely skills l

below it, but imo the original is neither one thing nor the other and has indistinct composition - editing it is like trying to polish a turd…

Yip, and that’s one of the reasons the thread was started. Sometimes it’s hard to see yourself if there is something lying underneath. I don’t actually think you’ve done too bad a job to be honest.
I now look at all of my stuff as thumbnails, if it doesn’t draw my interest then it gets put into the delete folder, its getting pretty big

spot on - photograph vs snapshot…for me, the hardest thing is rendering a 3d viewfinder image into a 2d printed image … but that why many of us enjoy photography

This tight crop has certainly solved some composition questions.
I like it. And the black & white render.
Colour can be a bugger - get’s you looking in all the wrong places !!

Well @Kirky it was your pic to kick us off. So it is up to you when we move to the next one, and more importantly, from who. Doens’t have to be the best edit, maybe just someone who took a little more time to describe their steps. No hard and fast rules so it’s cpmpletely up to you :+1:

Yes I think the one above B & W is the best of a bad situation all the while I appreciate all the others efforts, advice & input, but trying to keep it simple using no Ai sky replacements etc I think the picture is definitely worthy for the trash bin, but on the flip side I shan’t beat myself up over it as I’m still in early stages of learning ( there’s a lot involved I know ) but it’s good to share thoughts & skills as hopefully it will help the ones that need it most along, so thank you anyway :+1:
I’ll now invite you Darren @DazC or @Andy401C Andy to chuck one in if that’s ok with you & see what can be achieved.

This is a NEF file from a Nikon, most programs should open it up ok? There’s a couple of things wrong with it, but there is something I love about it, it’s up to you guys to make it what you will. I’ll post my finished edit near the end.

Here’s my bash at it, adjusted the light sliders in ACR here & there, bit of colour & saturation adjustment tad of clarity & negative dehaze, tweaked the shadows & mid tones, little bit of masking with the brush again negative dehaze, bit of sharpening & that’s about it,
By the way it’s a nice picture love the sun coming through the trees, still learning so that’s as good as it gets from me cheers. :+1:

Why a Wetransfer?

Because the forum rejected the NEF file
