Man charged after flying drone near edinburgh airport

Ignorance or deliberate ?

My (DJI) drone tells me if I’m even a few yards into restricted airspace (accidentally launched with Cardiff Prison FRZ a few months back) got to anout 20’ and an alarm, audible and on the screen, told me I was in an FRZ snd to land immediately, which I did; bit embarrased about that… Assuming this bloke’s drone is similarly equipped, he won’t be able to plead ignorance!

Interesting because the DJI Geo Zone Map lists all prisons in the UK as enhanced warning zones and not FRZ’s.

Eh?
DJIs in the UK havent had hard restriction zones or anything like that for a year or 2.
Almost everywhere now is an enhanced warning zone (including HMP Cardiff, i just checked). If you try to fly it’ll just produce a popup with a tickbox accepting responsibility for flying there. No alarms, beeps, warnings, restrictions.

(And not everyone uses DJI).

And not everyone updates the flysafe database :person_shrugging:

I wasn’t being prevented from flying in the prison zone, but was being asked to confirm that I accepted resposibility, no thanks so I landed and went somewhere else. I was only about 5yards inside the zone so that was no hardship and I was grateful for the headsup! I assume something similar happens in airport FRZs.

I accept that not everone flies DJI but clearly the majority of us do, and ā€˜assuming this bloke’s drone is similarly equipped’ allows for that. My flysafe database is up to date.

You dont get audible alarms.
And the enhanced warning comes up when on the ground taking off.

That said if its was only 5 yards then maybe GPS accuracy only got high enough to ā€œdriftā€ into it after takeoff.
