Another daft question possibly.
Does the gimbal cover lock the gimbal in place so the lens can be cleaned?

No, the gimbal cover actually covers the lens completely,
It locks it into a fixed position, and clips keep it in place.

So how can I lock the gimbal in place while I clean the lens? I am concerned that I might damage it.

Simple answer, You can’t, you will have told hold Camera body still with your fingers while you clean it.

Might sound obvious but make sure it’s turned off first.
