Additional notes:
This is the first time a meetup has been planned here - so, with forecasts suggesting ..

  • dry :white_check_mark:
  • light winds :white_check_mark:
  • quite warm (24?!) :white_check_mark:
  • on a bank-holiday :white_check_mark:
.. it seemed the perfect opportunity to give it a go.

7 hours? 11am to 6pm? Well - I'll be there the whole time (perhaps sunbathing :winking_face_with_tongue:) - feel free to arrive/depart at any time during (or beyond) those times. :+1:

The suggested car park is pay-n-display - Streetview suggests that parking on the road side behind the beach huts is also pay'n'display ..and Google Maps shows double-yellows on the road itself. :scream:
(I've normally flown here at silly o'clock times of day and in mid winter .. so I've never paid to have accurate, let alone up-to-date info.)
Parkopedia suggests pay-n-display starts at £1.55 for an hour, and goes up to £6.95 for 6 hours.
It's a bank-holiday .. and it's forecast to be warm .. so parking might be a little sketchy, but I've never had to spend too long looking for a space even on such days (pre-drone flying, admittedly)

Driving past the automated barriers into the Calshot Activities area also incurs a charge (after the 20 mins free) of £1 per hour.
But it's only half a mile to walk there.

Low tide is around 12:30 .. which provides loads of Crown Foreshore for TOAL and also excellent scope for images of something other than "a lot of sea" .. both on the seaward side, and in the mud banks immediately to the north.
A long row of colourful beach huts can also be a treat for drone photography.
No idea on shipping schedules into/out-of Southampton/Fawley.. but there's usually plenty of interesting vessels passing within a flyable distance.

There are loos at the suggested car park (Streetview "promises" me), and there's a café at the activities centre - that will also have loos.

The Meetup Map clearly marks the suggested car park, and meetup location.

NOTE!!
I - and many others - have taken off from within the area of Calshot Activity Centre and Castle (which is all Hampshire County Council land) without issue - but a recent post suggests they are now speaking to drone pilots and to request that they don't.
So - the suggested parking is before their gates.

ALSO .. bring a chair. For me, there's always been something to sit on .. but I've not tried competing with a hot bank-holiday load of tourists.

Hopefully see some/many of you there!

Don't be shy - even if your drone flying experience is limited .. there's always plenty of supportive advice at these meetups. You are equally welcome.
Also, don't be afraid of "the sea" .. either. Your drone doesn't know. :winking_face_with_tongue: Genuinely, though .. don't use that as a reason not to pop along! .. and you can still say "Hi!". :+1:

Please remember to wear your official Membership ID card to this club meetup — it helps other members recognise you straight away.

Official club meetup ID cards and lanyards are available from our shop:

Tagging regional group @group-southeast to let you all know :person_raising_hand:t2:

Also tagging @Eyeball @markasmithson as you said you wanted to fly here :person_raising_hand:t2:

Hope to see you there!

Apologies to those that found the email notification rather strange with “?” where there should have been the emoji, as above .. a copy/paste stripped them out unexpectedly. :man_facepalming:

I’m thinking about attending this meetup @OzoneVibe

The forecast I looked at earlier ..

#OtherForecastsAreAvailableThatMayDisagree :winking_face_with_tongue:

The past two weeks have been amazing at Calshot. I’ve captured some great footage of the police CTSFO exercises on the Solent.

Absolutely gutted - the closest meet up to me yet and I’m away!!

Take 6C off that for the Calshot Spit Effect. 16C off for inside the velodrome.

Agreed, I fly from there at least 5 times a week and the temperature forecast should always be taken with a pinch of salt. The Spit certainly has its own little clime. :joy:

My kids used to ride the Winter Track League in the velodrome. We thought the car park was the coldest place on Earth until we went in to the velodrome and it was a good 10C colder than outside…
