I’m being lazy. This is local to me so it’s you guys that will have to brave the traffic on and off a holiday island. Shouldn’t be too bad on a weekday, people at work, kids at school.
This is the site of a heavy anti aircraft battery with three of the four gun emplacements visible, a couple of the stores and magazines and adequate parking.
The lake is the resut of gravel extraction to build Mulberry Harbour Phoenix sections down by the Ferry. It is now private and used by carp fishermen, so keep high over it to avoid annoyance. The height will give you great views and 360 panos - Portsmouth, Langstone Harbour, Hayling Island itself, the Solent and the Isle of Wight.
Over the lake are further people to upset, the land is the Hayling Island Golf Club with a good 18 hole course and a nice 1930’s clubhouse. Sinah Warren, an upmarket holday camp based on a country house is across the road to the north of the AA site.
The parade ground is a good level area for practice flight. The site is popular with dog walkers so follow the golden rule - don’t be a dick! People here are generally friendly and respond well to seeing the view from above on your controller or phone
Parking is free, there is some seating but no toilets or refreshments. The Ferryboat Inn 800 yards down the road has a cafe near it and public toilets outside. There is plenty to see there but at a parking cost of £6. No problem if people decide to setup down there and see the Mulberry Harbour, the Ferry and the Eastern tip of Portsmouth.
Regarding Parking - there are two areas, the first you come across has no height restriction and is essentially a layby by the side of the road. Unless it is very busy we won’t use that one, instead carry on a hundred yards and turn left. There is a 2 metre barrier, pass under that and park as far down the road as you can. If you see a 1952 Citroen saloon you are in the right place.
