Yes I do see your point @stevesb and others, it’d just be nice buy products that have a chance of enduring. To be honest I reckon that if the rules stay as they are, many who have been flying in the Open A1 with C class will continue to do so and it’s hard to see fault IMHO
My all time favourite scene, brilliant movie.
Martyn @ZaphodB
I was in the same boat as you not that long ago about trying to justify the spend on the Air3s with the rules not being over clear on what happens next when we hit 2028 and as many have said the goal posts are always being moved and the CAA just don’t have a grip on the fast pace of the tech.
As others have said live for the moment and worry about the future when it happens.
As far as I can see the A2 CofC will remain a thing for the future and even with current changes there is still a fair bit of benefit for the A2 CofC for drones in the C2 class
I have been planning on doing the A2 CofC for years now even when I didn’t have the need and still largely don’t have a need for it, but the way I see it is that I have invested in the hobby in hardware I may as well also invest in myself with knowledge. So if come 2028 my Air 3s becomes legacy - cool - its not a worthless drone - I will just have to invest in what ever learning / certifications to ensure I get as much benefit out of the drone for as long as I can. In the mean time I am going to fly the props off this beast and make full use of the current regs.
In no way do I see that my Air 3s will become worthless in the future - it will just give me an excuse to buy what ever else is out there that suits my needs and wants
I’m of the same opinion. We can, to some degree, control what happens today, but have no control over the near, medium or distant future. I got my Air 3s on that basis and will most likely do the A2 C of C in the near future, to mitigate change.
Touching on your point about products enduring, we live in an age where tech is literally changing before our eyes. Policy and law makers are always playing catch up. Investing in tech is a bit like deciding whether to jump on the carousel and which horse to go for. if you spend too long thinking, the carousel is off and running and you’re left behind. If money allows, take a punt and enjoy the moment. Life is short.
Big thanks to everyone for the feedback, it’s been very interesting and informative. Still 100% sure about which direction to go but I will keep you posted. Happy Flying
I don’t think there’s any ambiguity as far as the EU and EASA is concerned. The CAA has been left to try to sort out some of the mess which has resulted from us ‘getting our country back.’ ![]()
Brexit truly is the gift that keeps on giving… . And don’t even get me started on how the halfwitted architects of all the mess are now likely poised to be given another chance - just because they’ve rebranded as Reform. As Shakespeare would have said,
“That which we call a stinking pile by any other name would smell as bad.”
Ooops, sorry, this isn’t the Are We Allowed To Talk Politics thread - bad Jennifer.
I agree, EASA looks pretty much identical it’s things like DJI classifying drones in Europe but not UK. So annoying, when they knew we were running the same rules. I thought that when covid came along we had the perfect opportunity put Brexit in the deep freeze. Oh and reward NHS staff, sadly not we decided to exploit instead. But I’m not bitter ![]()
The CAA have created their own “mess”. They could have kept everything the same, but decided not to.
The majority you mean.
I mean Reform - populist proto-fascists like Farage and the opportunistic Tories who’ve fled to them. I don’t mean the very slightly more than half of the electorate who could be bothered to vote, who were hoodwinked by false promises of hundreds of millions more for the NHS each week, many of whom have apparently changed their minds…
