Never knew this was under the thick ivy, there was a gate fitted to a old stump, going to cut below grass level to seed over,
Just by pure luck I noticed small part of the carving, removed ivy and cleaned it up, but not to much to keep the dark shadows. Loved to know why and how it was done,
The tradition of carving scary faces in trees in Ireland, particularly for Halloween, is rooted in the Irish folktale of Stingy Jack and the creation of jack-o’-lanterns. Stingy Jack, a man who tricked the Devil, was cursed to wander the earth with only a burning coal as a lantern, which he placed inside a carved-out turnip.
A mate and I had a lovely run along the west coast of Scotland yesterday. East coast > Inverary > Oban > Glencoe > St Fillans for the Mirror Man > Home.
A couple of pics from today , it was the first test drive for one of my little grey fergie’s with the cab I have been restoring and fitting for the last few months while I recover from the broken leg and hip , it’s taken a while but very nearly finished now but as I am awaiting the last few bits I thought the weather was to nice not to go for a few hours road test lol .
lol no it’s a original Lambourn mk3 cab. , back in the 1950s no tractor came with a cab so a few companies sprung up who all made universal cabs for different makes of tractor cab , they cost about £38 new then , a lot more now for a original , they where just for some protection from the weather , the safety cab didn’t become a thing for many years after . This mk3 has had the fibreglass top to replace the original canvas as many did as fibreglass started to be a thing .
The pics show the state it was in when I bought it and a Lambourn mk2 on my other Fergie but her cab was fitted from new by the main dealer
lol best way as our old rural hobby’s cost a fortune , us old farm boys and girls tend to have vintage tractors instead of vintage cars although some richer ones have both , although these 2 have been in my direct family for very nearly all their lives they are both long since retired from work and now enjoy their retirement going to local vintage shows , charity tractor runs and pleasure drives around the local area on nice sunny days lol. They do well as both are original , the one I’ve just fitted the cab too is 1955 and my other is 1952 .
On my way to my “local” (it’s a 50 minute walk type “local” ), a guy has been hand carving this “totem pole” (?) in his garden, and until last week it’s been hidden behind a scaffold.
