New Drone Flyer in Southampton

Just got my drone today and very excited to learn a bit more about it.

If anyone has a recommendation for a nice big open area I can use to practice flying in the Southampton area it would be much appreciated.

Cheers
Dave

Might be out of your way, but @TerryEN10 and I were talking about heading over to New Milton for a flight sometime soon? I’m assuming that’s a “more the merrier” situation, but apologies if not.

If New Milton is too far out of your way, let us know where you can travel and we can give it a look?

Welcome, Mayflower Park next to the ferry terminal is good. Plus you could film a few cruise ships.

I got a DJI mini 4 , I did a course on Sunday with drone school uk and couldn’t wait. Just looking for places to fly in open areas…. Looks like Southampton isn’t the best place

Firstly welcome… Secondly you’re right, it isn’t the best place to fly for varying reasons. Officially Southampton City Council do not allow hobbyist drone flying in their open spaces. I’ve used a great little TOAL point in the past up on the city wall by the Pilgirm Fathers beacon.

What does TOAL mean…. Being new I think I can ask such a question :grinning:

No question is a silly one, as @D0c.Col said, use the magnifyer at the top of the window and have a search as there is most likely someone who has experienced or asked the same thing before now.

Hi Dave,

You are right about Southampton Council saying you can’t fly drones without their permission, however there is one Park that allow Model Aircraft flying and I have flown my drone there: Large open space managed for recreation

Location

Lordshill Rec
Brownhill Way/Redbridge Lane
SO16 5NG

Facilities

  • Sports pitches
  • Model aircraft flying
  • Managed for wildlife
  • Car parking

The Model aircraft flying area is not marked out anywhere, just a notice on the side of the Rugby Club club house about flying model aircraft. I understand from the groundsman the last time we was there, (2023), it is the SW corner of the park. It is a good open space to practice flying in. I hope that helps. Obviously weekdays are best as you only need to contend with dog walkers mainly.

Along the waterfront at Woolston is another good flying location. I’ve also flown just by the side of Netley Sailing Club, no issues there but don’t TOAL from the grounds of Royal Victoria Country Park (Bylaws)…

Thanks I’ll give it a go!
