Hi: I’m based in Ealing West London. I used to fly a fair bit of R/C but now it’s all indoor free flight. Photography and fly fishing are my passions too. I am thinking about a Dji mini pro 5 for still photography for an upcoming jungle fishing trip, so I rented one from hyğğlo just to figure out whether it’s something for me. I have operator and flyer id numbers but never used them. I’m a little apprehensive both of the myriad restrictions there are with drones- such as where to fly in order not to get into trouble/ apparently Ealing is pretty much a no no, so I shall try somewhere more hassle free. I
do worry about my own competence flying a drone but I have I tried one once before and found it intriguing how close I could fly over a river and to see the fish from the air was spectacular. I do wonder whether the 1” sensor will impress in terms of detail and range for still photography. Reassurances of course welcome.

Flying a drone is great fun but sometimes you feel the need to have a purpose for doing so and the Challenges category provides some great reasons for you to fly.

Support, advice and constructive criticism is freely available; still photography, video and the techniques for editing both are involved in the challenges. Suggestions, for subjects or for complete challenges, are always welcome - take a look in the Challenges category for more information.
We’re a well established club with many knowledgeable members so it’s very likely that any issues you come across will have been discussed here before. Our discussion forum has very powerful search features which should help you find what you need but if you get stuck you can post a new question in the Questions & Answers category.

“A jungle fishing trip” sounds like it’s going to involve some dense canopies and plenty of foliage? Might be worth considering something like the Neo 2 or Avata 360 as their design with the built-in propeller guards is a whole lot more forgiving in that kind of environment.
In any case, if you’re going for a DJI drone I’d highly recommend their Care Refresh, especially considering your upcoming jungle trip

Hi and welcome to GADC. Sounds like a good trip. Remember to put your operator id somewhere in or on the aircraft. It should be in a place that you would not need tools to use to get to it. You do not need the flyer ID displayed anywhere but keep i handy. Competence comes with flying. Let the drone help you by avoiding sport modes as all your avoidance sensors will have a little sleep and the only thing to wake them is switching out of sports mode, With all those trees around you do not need sports mode. Finally remember that Obstical Avoidance may miss small branches so still be aware of the surroundings.
Also if you are going to be in the proximity of a lot of trees, remember that the pro 5 has its props open to the elements. Not sure how the Pro 5 and the Neo 2 compare but the neo 2 has protected props from some collisions. The avata is a touch contender but say bye to the Obstical Avoidence but they are pretty touch. Look into what they can all do to make your choice.

thanks again for the warm reception on this forum. I had my first go at flying and photographing with the rented dji mini pro 5. I shot some river landscapes. The flying went much easier than I thought thanks to the initial tuition I got from the owner of the drone. Because he taught me on some fairly short grass, the take off and landing were easy peasy, but a bit different where I went to fly where the grass was quite a bit more uneven. Not as big of a problem taking off, more so landing- where i managed to crash the drone into the grass, luckily with no harm done. I was thinking I’ll take a piece of card with me next time. I’m well impressed with the mini pro 5. I do think the image quality of the stills leaves a bit to be desired. Having owned several different Nikons, Lumix, Fuij digital still cameras, I’m a bit fussy I guess. I could see some artifacting in the shadows and the definition of the leaves and twigs was what i would describe as ‘impressionistic’. However I did wind up realising the video clips are really cool. I know one thing, I would prefer to have even the sound of the drone and the natural environment on the footage so need to think how I mike this. I understand there’s a mini pro 6 in the pipeline with a better cmos. All in all a very educational experience!
