I bought a DJI Mini 3 Pro in April this year and rapidly fell in love with aerial photography; it’s magical. I especially enjoy piecing together short, slow films and matching them with favourite music. You can see a few examples on my YouTube channel.
I find the flying/filming aspect mildly stressful as I’m permanently convinced that I’m going to crash or lose my drone somehow. Then in August I managed to fly it straight into the Atlantic on the first day of our summer holiday, never to be seen again.
I was happily filming waves lapping at rocks along the shoreline, from a clearly safe height, when a splash appeared on the screen, followed by messages that the rotor blades were stuck, followed by messages saying I’d lost the connection to my drone, followed by the horrible realisation that it was gone.
Not only had I lost my drone but I’d also accidentally dumped a lump of plastic and a battery into the sea which is really not what I want to do!
A quick dash to the local Argos to get a replacement was unavoidable. I won’t go into the fact that my drone insurance had expired without me realising three days before and my holiday was suddenly a lot more expensive than planned.
