Hi, new member here from Glenrothes in Fife, Scotland. Been thinking about getting a drone for a while now and finally took the plunge with a DJI Mini 4 Pro a week or so ago. I got a good Black Friday deal from DJI and also bought the Freewell Mega ND Filters Pack also on a Black Friday deal from Dronesafestore.com. I took the 2 year Care Refresh option from DJI to be on the safe side. I bought a couple of memory cards from Amazon on a Black Friday deal, both Samsung Evo Select, a 512gb for the drone and a 256gb for the RC2. I believe that the Evo Select cards are made specifically for Amazon and are basically Samsung Evo Plus cards in a different coloured package. I have a Panasonic 4k camcorder and have used Samsung cards in it and never experienced any problems, hence going with the same brand of cards for the Mini 4 Pro.
As it is a xmas/birthday present it is currently packed up until xmas, but we did do a test flight to check out that all was well with everything. The test flight went well and I found the controls easy to use if a little sensitive, even in the cine mode, however I’ll get used to it I’m sure. I did record the flight and all was well with the recording, apart from the fading light and the fact I put a filter on to suit the light settings which changed drastically as the sun went down. However, it recorded with no glitches with the video set to D-Log M on the 265 codec.
About me - I am 67 soon to be 68 and retired at 60. Originally I was an electronics engineer but ended my career working in IT at our local Council doing Project and Programme management.
I am also a lifelong musician and have a small studio set up in my house where I can record and produce music and videos. I was mainly a guitarist but play a few other instruments such as bass, upright bass, keyboards, flute etc I took up playing pedal steel guitar about 10 years ago and this has become my favourite instrument to play.
Anyway, looking forward to flying the drone and producing videos from the footage. This looks like a great forum for learning the skills and knowledge for drone flying and look forward to getting involved.

Compared to the videos I’ve watched from other members it’s pretty amateurish at best but it was really just testing things out and getting used to the controls etc. It’s a bit dark as I had put on an ND filter to suit the light settings when I arrived at the launch location, unfortunately the sun chose that moment to set so by the time I got the drone in the air the light had faded quite dramatically. However it wasn’t about getting a pro video I was just testing that everything worked and was pleased that the video was smooth with no glitches. Hopefully future videos will be better.
I recorded in D-Log M using the 265 codec and did a bit of quick colour correction to bring back the colour etc.
Hey Geoff and welcome to The Club. I’m just a short trip along the road in Perth, you have some wonderful places in Fife to visit with your Mini4 Pro, it’s a gorgeous part of Scotland that’s quite often overlooked. Don’t worry about the controls too much, they can be controlled!!! Have a search for “Ian In London” for some videos on how to slow things down a little and make them more manageable. If you ever need a didge player for some backing tracks give me a shout
Hi Joe, I’ll check that out, thanks. Would love to use some didge on backing tracks, I have a couple of cheap didges and can get a sound out of them but the circular breathing technique always eluded me.
Do you have the means to record and export in wave format, if so I could incorporate them into my mixes?
I’ve just created a new YouTube channel to host vids put together by my partner and myself, the idea is to feature walks in our area and beyond, I’ll be putting backing tracks together for them. We’re starting off with Alva Glen, this will be a slide show vid of photos we took on the walk. In the future we will be incorporating drone footage. I already have a backing track for this but would be interested in some didge for future tracks.
Here’s a link to a vid I made some years ago when we did the North Coast 500 with music backing I wrote with the exception of the final tune. No drone footage at that point but would hope to do similar vids with drone footage in the future, albeit probably shorter in length
Hi Geoff and welcome to GADC. I’m sure you’ll soon learn to use the settings to slow things down ( in the gain and expo settings menu) Lots of videos on YouTube explaining the ins and outs of the menus . Have fun
