A quick look at the one nearest me, HMNB Portsmouth, doesn’t seem too unreasonable?
.. especially when you consider the big carriers are about this big .. you’ll be able to get real close. (It may increase size ..
)
They probably know anyway but tf they didn’t our enemies now have locations that are deemed of national security importance
None near me, but whats next
Soon we will only be able to fly in an open field with nothing around for 10 miles
I think you’re over exaggerating there ![]()
All those sites listed are quite sensible in not flying over. Most if not all listed have had FRZ’s thrown around them for years anyway.

I’m very surprised DEMS Kineton has never had an FRZ thrown over it. Having visited there numerous times and even stayed over at the Sgt’s Mess, it’s not the kind of massive site you want idiots flying over.
But I’m guessing now it will be a prohibited place, at least you’d hope it would!
UKHO in Taunton is a new FRZ
Just a thought. The really secret places probably don’t have FRZ or any restrictions at all around them, specifically in order not to draw attention to themselves.
Back in ‘85, I had a job with a specialist industrial cleaning firm which had contracts with the MOD, mostly deep-cleaning or asbestos stripping on Army or RAF bases. Some of the work was done in NBC suits with filtered breathing apparatus. One of the dafter jobs I had was to clean out any asbestos left after a full-scale stripping job in an aircraft hanger. I had to sweep the hanger floor with a bass broom because I was not allowed to use any electrical or petrol equipment in there, and sweep slowly so as not to raise a dust. Took my 9 weeks.
The reason I had to sweep up the dust by hand eas that, in this hanger, were five Tornado fighter-bombers, and they were fuelled, battery-charged, and carrying munitions. Also, it didn’t escape my notice that they had no RAF markings or serial numbers either. The hanger was still sealed for the stripping job, and I went in each day in a fresh NBC to plod around it with a fresh broom. At the end of the day, I bagged up the NBC and the broom to be decontaminated.
An RAF sergeant was stationed in the small guardroom outside, and I would join him for lunch; we got on well enough. When I mentioned the Tornados, he gave me a very upside look and assured me that the hanger was empty and there were no aircraft inside it, and reminded me that I’d signed the Official Secrets Act. Of course, I have no idea what the Official Secrets Act is, and neither did he, because it’s an Official Secret…
This hanger can be clearly seen from the main road and the railway line that run along the base’s perimeter. There is no visible additional security for it other than that it is on an RAF base. But inside are what I assume are ‘first response’ aircraft kept in instant readiness to repel an attack, and that there is no record of their existence. There could be hundreds of such aircraft alm over the country and the chances are that foreign powers, even ostensibly friendly ones, are unaware of their existence, almot hidden in plain sight. For all I know they’re still there, but I imagine they’ve been repaced with somthing a little more up to date by now.
And if anyone thinks I’m bullshitting about this, that simply reinforces the level of secrecy! Of course, there is an FRZ around the base, so you couldn’t be flying over this hanger anyway without permission. But might not the same principle be used for other facilities, perhaps a T.A. transport depot concealing a top-secret command centre, or the basement of a general hospital as nyclear warhead storage. Nobody’d know!
Just sayin’.
I have added to a thread of mine how to gain permission to fly inside the RAF Alconbury restricted zone.
You signed a document you had no idea what its contents were you were signing. ![]()
That’s even more concerning. ![]()
Although you didn’t actually have to sign the Act to be bound by it. The Act did state that a person can be notified they are bound by it. Even though the new National Security Act 2023 is now in force, Section 5 of the former Official Secrets Act 1989 still remains in place.
Many years ago I was vetted and had to sign the Official Secrets Act. I was curious to know how long my signing was effective after reading your post. Apparently I’m still bound by it!
The Official Secrets Act 1989 provides legal protection against unauthorized disclosure of official information. It is effective indefinitely, meaning that the protections it offers are not time-limited and will continue to apply as long as the Act remains in force.
After your disclosure expect a knock on the door ![]()
Technically everyone is / was bound by Section 5 of the Act. It didn’t just apply to those who signed a document.
And you’ve just contravened it, John! ![]()
- Unauthorised Disclosure: Offences under the 1989 Act typically carry a maximum of two years in prison and/or an unlimited fine.

Just was listening to Geeksvana about DroneAssist which he suggest we no longer use as it’s not getting the necessary support from Altitude Angel which is supposedly under administration. I also saw a post here that Drone scene also relies on the same engine.
Could you please shed some light on this? If I am totally off the beaten path, my apologies and you are free to correct my assumption above. Thanks.
Drone & Sundry posted a better explanation earlier today. Apparently some new restrictions today are not in AA data.
@uduwawalan as discussed previously, Drone Scene uses a hybrid approach and draws on multiple authoritative sources of data.
@Crackerjack as per the video you linked to on sUAS News, Drone Scene also displays the new MOD and other protected military areas that came in to effect today, 19th February 2026.
@uduwawalan here’s a screen shot from Drone Scene this evening which shows the new MOD Flight Restriction Zones over RAF Lakenheath and over RAF Mildenhall - as per the sUAS News video.
As per Gary’s video, these new military restrictions are NOT currently on the Altitude Angel Drone Assist app or on other Altitude Angel platforms, but they are all still available on Drone Scene:
The new MOD restrictions that came in to effect are currently in blue on Drone Scene, we’ll get them changed and moved over to the red flight restriction category shortly to make it clearer and more uniform.
@uduwawalan please be assured that unlike the Altitude Angel Drone Assist app, the data used in Drone Scene is current and up to date, for example, critical layers like NOTAMs are updated every hour by data provided directly from NATS and includes full support for all of todays legislative changes.
Ooft. Hadn’t appreciated how big the one over HMNB Clyde is.
Mostly everyone knows Altitude Angel went into administration, he didn’t create breaking news. ![]()
