Newbie from Bromley any suggestions for flying here

Hey Everyone,

My name is Ishan and I currently live in Beckenham (in Bromley Council). I was thinking of buying myself a drone for quite a long time and now that I finally have one (just got delivered yesterday), I can’t wait to take it out for a spin hoping that the weather will be favorable during the weekend.

I was checking the DroneAssist app and found that most of the parks are marked as Amber.

I would really appreciate for any suggestions about the places around Bromley, where I could fly and practice on my flying skills.

I have already got the required Operator as well as Flyer ID

Thanks,
Ishan

Hi Ishan - welcome to GADC :+1: :+1: :+1:

The amber zones you mention are “Ground Hazards” that may need extra caution - nothing to say you cannot fly those areas - just use a bit of common sense. For your first flight you need an open area away from trees and people - then just enjoy :+1:t3: :+1:t3: :+1:t3:

Hi Ishan @nullptr7

I’ve flown in both Norman Park, Bromley, and Lloyd Park, Croydon.

But with a Mini 3 Pro, you could fly almost anywhere. Find a green space, walk to the middle, take off and explore! Avoiding crowds and trying to not be annoying works well for me.

Also, welcome to the club!

Also also, do check out DroneScene :slightly_smiling_face:

Hi,

Relatively new to drones myself, been flying for just over a year now but jumped feet first in.

Most grasslands are fine to fly in so long as you take it away from people or buildings. Stick to open areas until you have a bit more stick time to move it without thinking too much. I just got myself the Mini 3 Pro from the Amazon Prime deal so looking forward myself to getting out with that soon. I have the FPV and Avata which are my main drones though.

Anyways, I live not to far away so if you or anyone close fancies a last minute meet, let me know. I’ve yet to meet anyone that flies drones near me so I’m eager to meet up with others that are local and flying

And I’m open to suggestions before then…

I sent an email to the Bromley Council and they did confirm they do not have any bylaws for Drones. Their reply…

The current Byelaws only restrict flying of aircraft “power driven” this is detailed within the laws as being driven by combustion of petrol vapour or other combustible substances or jet/rocket propelled (small reactor motor powered by a small solid fuel pellet).

These Byelaws were written in 1984 many years prior to Drones being available.

To confirm, we can only refer to the CAA guidance until such time that the Byelaws are mod ernised.

Nevertheless, I managed to get my maiden flight at Croydon Recreation Ground. I was lucky to not have much crowd

DroneScene has a feature where it can help find Freedom of Information (FOI) Act requests made of councils.

I think there’s a thread here about council bylaws, and the consensus here seems to be, there are no bylaws in place worth worrying about. I would keep clear of the Royal Parks though.
