Our very own Statue of Liberty

The Statue of British Liberty, by Christopher Richardson was built for George Bowes, M.P. and coal owner.

The four-metre high lady, (once gilded) representing Liberty holds the Staff of Maintenance and Cap of Liberty, she stands on a 140 feet high column which was erected by local labour between 1750-57 at a cost of £2000…
