Possible further bad publicity for the drone community

Not a regular “soap” watcher but caught briefly a bit of Emmerdale ITV this evening.

Young lad was flying his new drone toy over the village. Closing scene showed drone stationary and pointing at bedroom window of a girl the subject of the lad’s so far unwanted attentions. Looks like the start of a storyline which is going to further damage the reputation of droning. Could be wrong but I fear the mysogonist brigade are about to have another field day.

If the lad was in awe of the young lady, he couldn’t be charged with mysoginy (dislike of, contempt for, or ingrained prejudice against women).

Won’t stop them even if it doesn’t fit the definition, as OP says it will bring further bad press to us.

Yes this would be bad. Finding out drone users watch Emmerdale.

Unfortunately mysogonist is now regularly used generically incorrectly just like racialist is in many other contexts. A wolf whistle would these days automatically designate the perpetrator as a mysogonist rather than just perhaps a rude uncouth admirer and some would regard it as a hate crime!

Many words now mean something they never did a week ago. No doubt the Oxford English Dictionary is currently being de-colonised by the revisionists as it was originally compiled by dead white men.

For those who believe “soap” watching and droning should be incompatible I did say I don’t watch ‘em! My attention was drawn briefly to identify the drone! I only briefly saw it and it didn’t look like anything I’ve got so non the wiser. I then had a garbled explanation of the relationship of boy, drone and girl and saw the window gazing bit at the end with a smirk on the lads face if I got it right.

Unfortunately I will now out of curiosity have to watch the next episode a) to identify the drone b) to see the possible damage done to our/my hobby by a potentially very dodgy storyline.

An adult did ask for a go on the drone but was refused by the lad not on the grounds he wasn’t qualified but simply because he might break it. Sadly a great opportunity to make a point regarding the laws passed up in favour of sensationalism.

Much like we’ve moved on from wolf-whistling by educating people. It would be far more useful to reach out to the CAA, who could perhaps make the makers of Emmerdale aware of laws and perhaps suggest storylines where drones can be seen as a benefit. Like helping farmers count their sheep or something.

The Geeksvana YT channel guy often has a CAA guy on his show, perhaps reach out to him if you don’t find him too annoying.

Oh for the innocent days of Annie, Joe, Amos and Mr Brierly! Errrm, I mean if those names I have totally made up ever did exist in what used to be called Emmerdale Farm…bugger think I may have given it away that I maaaay have watched it many many years ago😱

This is the response I have sent to one of our national clubs:

Apparently yesterday’s episode of Emmerdale included a story line of a drone being used to spy into a girl’s bedroom! I think a response from a national droning body, if not a complaint, should be made to the programme makers.

Members of the droning fraternity adhere to the law and to the spirit of adhering to good practice. We have taken the trouble to obtain training and take pride in responsible operation. The Emmerdate programme damages our reputation and an official response should be made.

yes we watched it even my wife said that’s illegal, plus an experienced drone flyer who i suspect was flying that should have known better. but i think it’s a bit late now as the scenes have been filmed. but they should be reported. like the other day some idiot was flying a drone in a park an yes it hit a boy cutting into his face.

I think at the very least the program makers should have had a disclaimer at the end of the episode stating this behaviour is NOT representative of the drone community in the UK.

Oh - come on!

People get murdered in soaps.
People get raped in soaps.
People commit burglary in soaps.
etc, etc. … in soaps.

All illegal (last time I checked. :stuck_out_tongue:)

Perhaps he’ll be arrested in a subsequent episode … like the murderers/rapists/etcs do.

I actually downloaded this episode in response to this thread, and was more struck by the silky-smooth, HD “onboard” footage coming from what looked like a toy drone from the middle aisle in LIDL. I suspect something a bit beefier from DJI’s range might have been swapped in for those shots.

I’m not sure there’s much of a case for drone awareness and education on prime time ITV to be honest. The aforementioned murders, kidnappings, affairs and the like probably do more for ratings than discussions about VLOS and FRZs… :joy:

“Don’t miss tonight’s episode!!! Someone’s going to get a right droning!”
