Joking aside, I actually think it says a lot that he’s up for doing it. He’s got a massive target on his back because of who he is, but he’s not a racer and not really a micro guy, so I think it’s great that he’s willing to look as average as the rest of us!
Talking of feeling average, I didn’t get to fly track 3 IRL but I did manage to grind out some laps on Velocidrone. Was feeling quite pleased with myself, and then I saw WillFPV’s YouTube entry (3 laps in under 20 seconds) and thought I should probably go practice a bit more.
Yeah well this the guy who won week one and two… And yeah I have no idea how they can do this… I’m there to improve myself(and maybe win some if the prizes, there’s loads to give away). Wanted boy to be last, and solidly off the bottom. Bring Bardwell would be a bonus, he ahead overall bit don’t think he did a track 3. I’m not a racer either, and he flies all the time, soooo…
Well that’s rather annoying. With $10,000 dollars of prizes for Racegow, all drawn through a live stream, open to most entrants (i.e. don’t have to be the fastest to win)… A couple of prizes are done, but you have to be on the livestream at the time… As was Easter I started watching it late today… Guess what happened…
RaceGOW is technically open to quite a wide range of models to make it as inclusive as possible - although the creator, FPV Skittles, points out that if you try it in your front room with a 5", you are responsible for the consequences, not him!
A more helpful answer is that the majority of people are flying 1s 65mm or 75mm Tiny Whoops. Some folks will be flying home-brew builds, but there are loads of really good bind n fly models.
If you already have suitable goggles and radio then the Happy Model Mobula 65 seems to be a go-to for a lot of people and is widely available.
If you don’t have goggles/radio then there are a several all-in-one kits you can buy - e.g the BetaFPV Cetus - but these come with very mixed reviews.
Yeah mob6 or I fly a betafpv meteor 65 pro. Though Bardwell says the mob6 better and faster than the betafpv, but what he know? He slower than a n00b like me
Absolutely, the starter kits some with poor controllers and goggles (emax for example the drone not bad, but the controller and goggles…) I bought a TX16S when I started 3 years ago and still use it for all my non DJI drones and planes.
In 2024 I’d go for an ELRS one, boxer or a T20. Goggles. Lots of choice depends on your budget. I originally bought a set of EV800s (actually fixed them this morning so they charge again, as the charge USB port had broken). I do like my cobra x, but they chunkier than some. Loads of choice mates older fat sharks. If you ever wanna get into digital, the HDZero ones are some.of the best, but will cost an arm and a leg with an analogue module. A good second hand market of fatsharks… Hard question really. I’d look at budget and reviews of some tbh.
Have a look at bardwells recommendations and check reviews
The EV800Ds are massive but they work well and not bad at all (mines going to be a table top screen now). Personally I have Cobra X and DJI V2s. The cobra X you can add walksnail or HDZero via a hdmi input at a later date. It’s not a cheap hobby mate.
I would say way pro there are only 3 tracks left on this current season and think it’s an annual thing (first time I’ve done it). I assume IGOW will be back which was the OG event and is aimed at tricks and skills. Will definitely try that this year. I know @Yith@Earwig and @Brengun took part in IGOW previously and it really improved their flying.
Just wanted to make you aware of that. I entered to just improve my flying and racing and that’s worked. It’s been fun to fly a specific track and then enter times. More focussed than just buzzing around the house.
Maybe we could have a grey arrows racing thing where we make the same tracks from the bits racegow use… Hmmm food for thought. Have a month to attempt it… I dunno. Been fun though
Re control protocols, totally agree with @GunjaFPV - starting from scratch in 2024, you’d need a really good reason not to go with ELRS 2.4 GHz.
So on the Mob 6 link you sent, the protocols on the list (FrSky, FlySky, Spektrum) are all from the previous generation of control links - ELRS will spectacularly out-perform all of these. The 2024 Mob 6 (ELRS 2.4 GHz) has just been released - although it looks like it’s back-ordered at a lot of UK vendors currently.
(Just a quick FYI: when buying ELRS stuff be aware that it also occasionally comes in a 900 MHz version, which is not compatible with 2.4 GHz ELRS. Highly unlikely on a whoop, but worth mentioning generally…)
As far as ELRS radios go, I personally like game-pad style controllers so I fly the Radiomaster Zorro, but in many ways I think the Boxer is a better radio, just with a more conventional form factor.
Goggles… this is the most difficult choice because they’re the most expensive bit of getting into FPV.
It’s got harder over the last 5 years - when I started the only option was analogue, so you just had to decide where on the scale between cheap and expensive you wanted to buy! Now there are also 3 competing digital system on the market as well - all offering different pros and cons, and none of them compatible with each other!
Analogue is still the cheapest way to get in the air - although probably not as cheap as you might hope! - if all you really want to do is dip your toe in the water.
The digital options are a lot more expensive - probably only worth considering if you are looking at getting into FPV quite seriously. Or if you’ve got a very healthy budget, in which case, why not!
