Remote ID - The Good, the Bad and the Ugly - Everything you need to know

Whatever system they come up with, I guarantee will not be that smart.

Just the other day I saw someone post a picture of a speeding ticket they got in the mail, for their car that was on the back of a toe truck!

When did that become a thing?

And surely its civil not criminal

My controller doesn’t have its own GPS receiver built in, how will they know its current location?

My location will be broadcast as the TOAL point of my drone - which now you mention it would / could also place me beyond theoretical VLOS if I start to walk up a hill.

The plot thickens

This is exactly the scenario the CAA ( and the media ) would have us believe could happen at any given moment. One of their web publications a while back even featured a photoshopped pic inside a passenger aircraft ( looked like it was at flight level 350 ( that’s 35,000 ft in aero terms) and there in the window there appears something akin to a Phantom 4 drone, happily flying just past the window. The photo was quickly removed from that
web publication however ) :wink::wink:

Not necessarily - the controller doesn’t have GPS, AIUI they just infer the location of the pilot from the takeoff location reported by the drone

“Drone and remotely piloted aircraft operators should also be mindful of the requirements of Section 76(1) of the Civil Aviation Act 1982 in relation to trespass and nuisance, noting that they must comply, at all times, with the relevant operating regulations.”

CAA Website

Yes, it would be a civil offence; although repeated offences could become criminal if they were to be charged as Harassment or causing alarm or distress I imagine.

The DJI Fly app on a connected smartphone will probably continuously update the operators location.

But agreed, controllers without a cellphone or GPS receiver can’t.

Hmmm so they only know the location of the controller when the drone takes off ? How on Earth are these apps that show the location of the controller as well as the drone going to work then ? I could set my drone to follow me mode, then bugger off on my bicycle. These apps then couldn’t track my location ?

The more I read of this the more doomed I think we will be, :person_facepalming:t2:

Sell up now & get back into radio controlled cars ? With a camera fitted of course ! No that won’t last long either, will probably get accused of perving up Karen’s kilt when you do a fly by :scream:

Karen’s law

If it relies on a smartphone’s GPS, that could be disabled on the phone.

Do controllers with built in screens typically have GPS ?

Never actually noticed, but I do know once the drone connects with the GPS satellites, I then get an updated map on my RC2 controller. As an experiment, next good flying day, I’m off down the park and set the drone off and have a walk of say 500-750m whilst it’s in flight and see if my home location on the map actually changes.:wink: ( of course I’ll follow the drone and maintain VLOS at all times. :+1:)
Edit, yes I know it won’t update the home point, but will be looking and see if my position on the map changes :wink:

The DJI controllers with screens DO have their own GNSS.
The RC-N2 etc. without screens do NOT have their own GNSS.

i imagine some people being forced out of their beloved hobby will retaliate by becoming auditors
(some people believe auditors who use drones have played a part in forcing the hand of the authorities RE RID)

if most quit the hobby the skies will be open for Amazon & other corps to rule, in which case that creates a brand new hobby of buying an air rifle & shooting them out the sky for fun & I bet someone somewhere will do it

Or signal jammers…

I suspected this, as the specs in the Mini 3 manual state the drone GNSS is GPS + GLONASS + Galileo, but the appendix on the RC controller specs says GPS + BeiDou + Galileo.

So (unless there is a mistake) that indicates the drone and controller have two separate GNSS systems. (Though it is strange that they are different.)

Just checking, is that the source of your information, or did you read it elsewhere ?

So . . . where can I buy a signal jammer Detector to track them down ?

(AI aimed shotgun accessory is entirely optional.)

Ditto!

As always, there are already rules and regs in place to deal with the idiots and criminals. The problem is they are rarely used or enforced, mainly due to a lack of resources and worse, a lack of understanding of those rules by the enforcers. So, bring out more rules to make it easier for them, then punish the whole lot of us and make us pay through the nose for the privilege. The idiots and criminals will continue to do whatever they want, whenever they want, RID will not stop them.

The big question is, how do we go about stopping this from happening?

Can’t even do that in Scotland without a license anymore. Licensing was brought out to stop people shooting out of their bedroom windows, they of course could have used existing powers to punnish the idiots. But nah, lets come up with an expensive scheme, make them buy a license and further line our pockets, that’ll stop the idiots!!!

Just to add

RID is only available on all modern drones, all new DJI drones have GPS on the controller to record its location, the ones that don’t like the Avata with Goggles2 will have to have a phone connected with an active GPS to take off

Any drone that is not compliant will have to have a separate RID module fitted

If you disable the GPS the drone will not take off (Indoors flying etc :scream:)
