Don’t we need sun for this challenge? ![]()
THIS IS NOT MY ENTRY!
Not an entry because, this was taken 11 years before the competition time-window and not from a flying camera.
This is Hyde Park in Sydney facing East, so Harbour Bridge and Opera House about a mile or so to the left in this photo. The bulbous SHADOW in the foreground is that of Sydney Tower Eye probably better known by its original name Centrepoint Tower.
The interesting thing about this pic is, that there are any shadows at all. “Right-to-Light” planning laws have existed for many years. Although they haven’t always been as well respected as they are today. Not seen in this pic is the Temperance and General Building at the south western end of the park which casts a shadow in winter. The pic was taken in summer, so Centrepoint would obviously cast a longer shadow in winter.
The rules are now much more strictly enforced, resulting in the sloping roof designs seen at the bottom of the pic and in many of the skyscrapers behind the camera position.
I had planned to try to go to the city to recreate this shot, but although we haven’t had it quite as bad as in the UK, whenever I had the time to try it was either cloudy or just chucking it down. Oh well keep trying.
A whole month to take pictures and only nine to vote for! The weather has been appalling so far this year, when it’s not been raining it’s been overcast - so well done fo those who did fingd a little window of sun and time to act upon it.
At least there should be plenty of water for the next subject - Rivers!
So, please vote for your two favourite pictures, the poll will close at 22:00 on Monday Match 2nd:
For next time anyone wants to capture a shadow, I just head about this site:
Shows you where the light and shadow will be at different times of day.
It’s been an awful long time coming, for which I apologise. Weather and unforeseen events conspired to drag this RTF out for a full month.
But now we are here, with two second places and a worthy winner.
In second is Ian - @Ian4 - with a very simple but effective picture of a Somerset tree casting its shadow at last light on the last day of the extended challenge
And joint second is Tim - @Jabtas with a film noir interpretation of a tank farm at Billingham. Fully expected to see James Cagney on the top: “Made it Ma, Top of the World!”
And then we have our winner - seasoned competitor Jason @Acedrone - with another simple but highly pleasing photo of a line of trees in Northamptonshire, taken on the original last day of the competition.
Congratulations to the three of them and to all who braved February’s abysmal weather to bring some excellent pictures to the challenge.
Now it’s time to see if there’s any water left after he February deluge in our Rivers - the subject of the current challenge
Well done to all who met the challenge.
I’d set off on a few occasions to capture shadows in the network of piles under Central Pier, Blackpool. Nice and sunny for all of 10 minutes, whilst I got there and set up. Then instant grey skies and flat lighting, most frustrating.
Thanks for the support everyone, great shots all round
A pity the weather conspired against us ![]()
I love this thanks ![]()
