Sadly losing enthusiasm

Sell the drone - I’ve £100 waiting here for you

Have any regulations actually been tightened yet because of them??

I’ve been fortunate in that I’ve not had any complaints at all. The only thing that happened that I thought was funny was that one of my neighbours saw a drone, and remarked on it to me - “I assume it was you”… “no - not me” I said - so then they complained about privacy etc… It was OK if it was me, but not if it was someone else… It’s easy then to just walk away…

I thought that term was reserved for people turning up to military parades, memorials etc with uniforms/medals that they haven’t earned the right to wear. Not sure I’d put them in the same category as someone wearing a hi-vis with “Drone Pilot” on the back

It doesn’t have to be that specific category… You get Walter Mitty coppers as well!

Why on earth would anyone want to make themselves out to be someone or doing something in an official capacity when they have no official authorisation to do so from a public body or likewise.

I certainly wouldn’t partake in that.

The Regulations are currently on the CAA’s “Drawing Board” and under review and consultation at the moment with them being due to be introduced in 2026 . I think the days of the current sub 250g in the UK - are numbered !

Same here. Never had anyone approach me asking questions…

Definitely get a Flouro Drone operators jacket. Wear your lanyards. Put earphones in. Flying FPV is worse, always needing a spotter. It is so exhilarating but when you have those goggles it’s totally immersive, but I always feel that someone may approach me without me knowing.

I wouldn’t go that far, I’m not a legal expert, you need a flyer ID, Operator ID and Remote ID to fly a 250gm drone.

Unless the CAA increase their charges (currently <£12.00) there will be no more financial outlay for pilots, DJI drones released since the Mini 3 Pro already have the RID hardware installed and a firmware update will activate it.

If the drone is flown within the legislation, then the pilot has nothing to worry about.

I’d be more concerned about what my smart speaker, phone, tablet computer, social media and other AI devices are listening too.

It’s a shame you feel bullied, for want of a better word. Drones have become so much more accessible and visible in Social media, than a few years ago. Unfortunately, the very negative press that informs the ignorant majority doesn’t help. You can’t control that, but you can control what you do and where you do it, as long as you know you are being responsible and safe. The whole Ken and Karen judgmental thing is just being British and will IMO eventually dissipate as people become more used to them, and as long as users maintain the high ground. I started out feeling very self conscious but I don’t anymore because I make sure I am avoiding any opportunity for confrontation. Admittedly, I tend to operate remotely most of the time, unless I’m practising, but whenever I come across people they are usually interested and non confrontational. I was recently asked by someone in my village ‘Was it me flying a drone over the houses?’ There are quite a few who know I fly a drone, but it wasn’t aggressive or accusatory just enquiring because I always try to educate when I meet folk and explain what I’m doing. You just have to find your niche, I guess, if open country isn’t your thing. I do appreciate that if you live in an urban environment it’s tricky. What I find frustrating is where places use bad press surrounding drones, to insist on a huge fee or simply offer absurd excuses as to why you can’t fly somewhere. I recently researched going to Iceland as the landscapes there are simply otherworldly. I have since found there are rules and regs about what times people are allowed to fly drones and spouting environmental protection, wild life protection, as the reasons why drones are not allowed in some areas but allowed in others, and the reasons are usually purely commercial. The flip side to those arguments are the environmental damage done by human activity, littering, fouling, soil erosion etc etc etc. The commercial aspect is a joke, as everyone has a camera these days but they don’t get charged for use! And so the debate will roll on. don’t give in to the neh sayers. Find your niche.

We were in Iceland last Sept/October, and the drone use was frankly annoying! There are places you’re not supposed to use them, but nobody takes any notice, flying way too close for comfort.
Mine came out just twice when I felt it was safe to do. Avoid the honeypot areas and you might be OK.

Thats interesting. I guess it’s a bit like the UK with the typical honeypot destinations in the Lakes, etc. Good to know.

It’s human nature to focus on the negatives, but don’t forget the positives and enjoyment you get from the hobby. Especially considering the amount of experiences you’ve had where someone has not approached you.

I myself have lost a little enthusiasm lately (mainly because of the weather and trying to get around the new rules coming into effect), but no doubt I’ll get back into it.

Reading below, you could get the impression it’s largely ‘just you’! But, seriously, you’ve not responded on where you fly from, where you take off, where you land and around what do you fly. These are quite relevant I reckon - I’ve flown my drone in Ireland UK France Hungary Iceland South Africa Cyprus and never once had anyone pester me negatively - what are you doing differently?

I know what you mean,it’s a shame and i even get problems with using my video camcorder funny looks etc, how funny is it that you can use your mobile phone and nothing is said !!
