Struggling with where to go for a first flight - Reigate

@sim667 Here’s the Morden Park location that @GerryA has recommended:

No need to worry about this part though:

Drone Scene has all the parking and TOAL markers you need to find everything easily

I like Banstead Common, plenty of room to fly, both vertically and horizontally with excellent VLOS and parking at The Sportsman Pub. ( have a quick drink there afterwards for free parking) I was trying to perfect my "Waypoints’ skills, and i used 3 batteries and only spoke briefly to 2 people. It has become my ‘go-to’ practice area

I’m not familiar with the area @SteveClark, is Banstead Common the same place / thing as Banstead Heath?

Yes, I’ve only ever known it as Banstead Common but definitely the same place

Thanks for the heads up on Morden Park. I’m going to try locally and then if I get a talking to I’ll head there, but I have to borrow a ULEZ compliant car to go there.

I was due to Dive HMT Northcoates out of Littlehampton, but it’s cancelled due to wind.

Hey Sim, I just done my first flight last week (after having my Mini2 for over a year lol) but took the plunge and went for it, I’m in Horley so as you can imagine I had to get in the car but a local golf club let me have pratice no problem Im happy to meet up and help if needed??

Oh yeah, I’m absolutely up for a meet up. :+1::+1:

Interesting, an armed trawler, I see from reading about it.

Check out the videos by Mads Kellerman (MK Creator). He succinctly explains some key RTH functions which largely take the worry out of your first flight - understanding the little display (looks like a pseudo-radar) in the bottom left is REALLY helpful to avoid disorientation - you really have to mess up pretty badly to lose a modern DJI drone…as said below, just hover and get used to flipping between screen and displays whilst flying (you can do this in the garden or in pretty much any park with the drone just in front of you) - Good Luck👍

I can’t quite remember it, but I have dived it before, if I remember rightly it was used as a mine sweeper, and all the cables hung over the front are still laying across the length of whats left of the deck

I actually decided just to go for it after my labeller turned up tonight and I got it labelled… of course there were things I’d forgotten from watching vids, and changing to that little radar was one of them.

Take off was fine, landing I couldn’t quite get at first, I had it in my head that it auto landed but it doesn’t… I quickly worked out just pulling down on the left stick landed it though. I’m gonna need practise for sure, and I only went up to 30 metres, but that already felt really high.

Anyway, with wife in tow to quickly google anything I’d forgotten, he’s a quick and dirty edit of my flight.

@sim667 where did you fly in the end?

And congrats

Hey nice one, sometimes you can get bogged down with watching loads of stuff etc so well done in just going for it. I havnt put my 1st flight on lol. But once I heard it say “home point updated” after take off I felt better. With my label maker I also added these to my controller which helped me.

Wray common in Reigate, I thought I could do the windmill you could see behind me, but it’s surrounded by trees, so thought better of it for the moment. It’s only a 5 min drive my house.

I totally forgot where the record button was

Labelling the controller isn’t a terrible idea, thanks!

Morden Park is on my doorstep. Flown lots of times, even had a meet-up. Load of empty space - never had a problem with locals. Worth case when Wimbledon park and ride as in operation security people getting too excited and wanting to talk to me about flying. When I just want to fly.

Loads of open space. Great views.

Some interesting dives there. Are you BSAC or PADI trained?

I did my PADI OW, and switched to BSAC. That was about ten years ago now. Do you dive?
