My latest clip is from outside of Cornwall, but the site is so hauntingly beautiful, I just had to film there again.
Birnbeck Pier at Weston-Super-Mare was originally built in the 1800’s, but has been left to fall derelict since the 1990’s. The great news though is that there is hope on the horizon for it’s restoration.
Many thanks to the Friends Of The Old Pier Society for allowing me to use some of their stills in this clip. See their site at www.birnbeck-pier.co.uk for lots of history and info.
Landed on that many times from the P&A Cambell paddle steamers that used to do Cardiff to WSM/Clevedon and down to Ilfracombe.
To my shame…on a trip to Ilfracombe, I felt seasick (not the best advert for the RN being in uniform!!)
I never ever felt or was seasick again in my naval lfe.
Be nice of they did restore it…Just need the Paddle Steamers again!
Thanks a lot. When we first arrived, it was raining and too windy so we went on a detour and drive through Cheddar Gorge. Went back to WSM for golden hour and got lucky. There were still very strong gusts, hence the lack of high shots in the clip as I didn’t want to risk even stronger winds higher up.
This brings back so many memories, would often travel from Cardif to WSM to visit my Gand parents we would cross on the paddle steamers Cardiff Queen, Bristol Queen, Glen Usk and the Ravenswood. It was a long walk along the pier on little legs.
No they phased them out
I remember an X-craft going out of the Sound and the pipe of ‘attention on the flight and weather decks…face to PORT’…Nothing…the all clear sounded and I srepped forward a few feet and there was this midget sub passing down the port side with the skipper holding on to the periscope!
Amazing how quickly stuff falls into disrepair and prbably storms over the years did not help…and the tide must be all of 45ft rise and fall on the pier end.
