I used to live next to (as in <350m from) the threshold of Heathrow’s 09L throughout the '80s.
It was staggering, even then with early auto-land tech in those days, how thick the fog could be and they’d still be landing.
As much as I love flying, I’d not relish being a passenger on an approach in those conditions.
Or a pilot I’d bet.
As a pilot, you are in control. Easier than a passenger having to trust someone else.
I’d say he/she would be using ILS so not 100% in control until they could see below the fog.
At least when it’s foggy there’s little or no wind to cope with
And you don’t get distracted by all that scary ground coming up to meet you…
Was going out to fly earlier but decided it was just too cold. I’m fine walking, which generates enough body heat so long as I’m reasonably dressed for the conditions (and wear a hat, you lose 40% of your body heat from your head if it’s uncovered because heat rises and all that nose, ears, and foldy facey stuff on your head increases the surface area that heat can be lost through), but a standing-still (or sitting on a bench) inactive activity like drone flying for an hour and a half will end with me chilled to the bone in this sort of weather no matter how well I’m wrapped up! And I’m at the age where people who get chilled like this get that new-mown yah, and then they die! Ventusky has some warmer weather from Monday and even a bit of sunshine in the week and the following weekend.
One of the cloudy days will be ok for practice flying. I really need to get to grips with the Maven app, which I have yet to get to perform for me; paid for it but not used it in anger yet. It’ll be useful even if it is limited to working with the Mavic Mini. It doesn’t work with the 4K.
One thing I didnt appreciate until this winter is how much bodyheat is lost through your backside if spending ages sat on rocks at waterfronts as I often do to capture the shipping. I ended up rearanging my drone bag to fit an inflatable camping cushion and its been a great addition to my kit. Just have to be careful the wind doesnt try to catch it.
… not according to Cleveland Health Clinic …
The truth is, you won’t squander anywhere close to 50% of your body heat through an uncapped noggin . Will you lose some heat? Absolutely … but a 2008 study shows that it’s more in the 10% range for adults. That figure makes sense, as it roughly matches the head’s percentage of your body’s total surface area.
Managed a cheeky 20 minute flight yesterday en route to collect my car from the garage. 20 minutes was enough standing on an icy hill top with a 0° air temp. ![]()
I’m looking to get one of these, should be dense enough to not blow away. For sitting on wet/cold stuff.
Would be nice if heated!
Would be nice heated but I found even for a few hours having something between you and cold surface made all the difference.
I’m used to carrying a large plastic bag to sit on to stop my but from getting wet. However as I get older I feel the cold more, the prom at Blackpool as loads of stainless steel benches, not short of anywhere to sit but recently not only wet but covered in snow/frost, the plaggy bag no longer cuts it.
My car has heated seats & unlike the rest of the family who love it, I’m not really sure!
I’ve had one of these in my walking bag for the last 10 years (and something similar in my military kit the 20 years prior to that). Also have one in my camera bag
Edited to add - the side I didn’t have a tape measure on is 30cm
Mountain warehouse makes great stuff.
Have just been out in -3 which ended up -4 for more than 2 hours. Tried to charge my phone but it was too cold so paused charging. Looked at the back of my bag and it was icing up. I was still warm but time to go home.
