Had a look around and can’t really find a definitive answer on what is quite a broad subject.
I am very tempted to get a DJI Avata. Watching all these cool kids with them on YouTube and thinking I didn’t have the space to really enjoy one till the other day I walked across the road from my house and found loads of public trails that lead to massive open spaces with rolling hills with trees to whip around just perfect for any drone but could be great fun with a FPV drone. Seems the area is a bit of a hidden gem. So as such I now have an itch to get an Avata but have a few unclear questions of what else I should be getting along with it or be made aware off.
First I know I need a Op/Fly ID ( have both as I fly a Mini 3pro )
I plan to get a A2 CofC as the drone is heaver than the sub 250g so still want some of the freedoms I get with the mini3 but in the FPV world
I think my big question is ---- do I get FPVUK membership ? And why would it be a benefit to me over having paid my dues to the CAA and possibly having the liability insurance via our own membership here ( also plan to get that too )
Besides having a spotter - is there anything else I may have missed that I think apply to a “normal” drone like the Mini3 that applies to a FPV but not to other drones?
Just not sure if I am setting myself up for a fail by getting one and not being able to enjoy it as much as I do with the Mini 3
This was my thinking all along but just needed someone to say - yip that’s how it is and that there would be little to no real benefit for me to pay for both.
Apply for an overdraft or credit card now as they will come in handy.
Fpv is highly addictive and will see you as the owner of a fleet of drones pretty quickly.
It’s also one of the most immersive ways to fly a drone and IMO the best way.
I’ve never seen my heartbeat increase and have sweaty palms from flying a camera drone.
FPV this happens every time.
At the moment I am just doing my research and being sure that I will be able to make use of it. I already have a bit of a money pit hobby with Lego so want to make sure I have ticked all the boxes from a cost point of view - A2 CofC - Insurance and the cost of drone etc.
After our holiday in 4 weeks time I will see how the savings are doing and more than likely pull the trigger on an Avata
With an Avata you probably OK with care refresh and the drone, goggles, etc.
In self built FPV I think the general rule is that if that drone costs £300, you should budget (FOR THAT SINGLE DRONE), around £600. i.e. double it I think in my experience that’s probably around ballpark correct
