Hi, I’m sure you don’t need to try too hard to convince yourself to buy a drone - just pretend. I can thoroughly recommend the DJI mini 4 pro with, if you can stretch to it, the RC2 controller. This makes it a really neat self contained unit. If you’re into waypoint missions it’s an ideal choice especially as the mission is uploaded to the drone itself so does not rely on virtual stick commands (VSC) from the controller. There is the option to continue the mission should signal be lost. You’ll be happy and become very comfortable using it quite quickly.
Whereabouts are you located? I’m sure another local member would happily hook up with you for your first flights if you wanted. ![]()
Id make sure the drone you choose has a built-in screen on the controller. Keeping your mobile separate and not draining your phone battery.
Id also recommend not buying cheap its comforting knowing your drone will stay put in the sky if you need to take your hands off the controller for a few seconds. After your first flight you will see how easy it is.
The remote should keep it charged up ![]()
Yes if but by doing this your using/reducing the battery life of the controller, pluss id prefer to keep my phone separate. Nothing more distractingvthan receiving a call or messages while you have the drone in the air. The phone is probably of more use not attached to his controller especially when on a hike.

Hi HoochMan
I’ve only had a drone a few months and had never flown or even seen one before.
My first flight was at a local park and set my success criteria at take off, move forward and back and then land. Start slow and give yourself time to build confidence.
The best part is if you let go of the controls the drone will stop. I did this often to experiment with changing the camera settings etc.
Good luck
Dedicated cheap/old “drone phone” - no SIM and airplane mode.
That would work. But still easier with a controller with a screen. Will also have the advantage of screen recording without needing to use a separate app.
Very good choice. I, as well as others will tell you that your choice of drone is a great choice. Just remember that DJI are great for flying. Just remember that on the sports mode, it will not try to avoid things. Use Sport somewhere you are very comforable but if you just stick to the normal mode you will be fine. The drone will warn you when the battery is low. As others have said, they pretty much fly on their own.
Agreed. All in one control. No messing connecting and (without sounding patronising or agist). People who are older, people with diabetes may have a little more awkwardness with the fingers or sensitivity so pulling the spring back and putting the phone in, messing with the USB cable. There is the risk of dropping the phone (which I did). I feel it is better having a controller with a screen built in.
I do not want to offend anyone who is in the higher age bracket but if you are unsure what the controllers are then best you know.
Or if you are like me with our mini 2, I found it a pain in the &&&& with the phone and stopped using it as much.
So. the difference. Non screen control. Have to get the USB cable out of the top, stretch the holder up and slide the phone in. Connect the cable to both the controller and the phone. When turning on the controller on ours it loads the software. You do need to update the phone software to keep it up to date. You have the added risk that if you are not using a spare phone then you could be interupted in your flight by a phone call. Also the cable could be loose.
With a screen controller it is just press the power. You just need to use an internet connection to keep the drone and controller updated but the flying is all in built screen.
I don’t post on here much , but hey welcome to the club and the very interesting passtime of flying drones .
I find some things hard to do as I’m new to them also , but Mini 4 Pro is the drone I opted for in the end .
I did like mini 3 pro VERY capable drone as would be the Mini 2 for sure , but sent that Mini 3 back, because It didn’t have the plan your mission thing called ‘Waypoints’ on the new remote ( the one with 2 black antenas on it ) ill call it that !
I hope you have a wonderful time with whichever you decide hoochman ! ![]()

Hey siri, record screen
Does android not do this ?
Clutching your straws now. Apple is probably the hardest of all phones to manage your files on.
Anyway this could go back and forth and im sure the gentleman will have a good idea by now what drone he needs to look out for. Ultimately its down to his personal choice and all we can give is our own recommendations.
Good luck to the guy. I hope im still out walking and droning at 74.
Oh btw were you not just suggesting to go sim free , will Siri work without a data collection ?
It does, unless you have slightly wierd accent like mine and pwonounce your W’s like Jonathon Woss, like I do. I feking hate Cortana (android version)
That was @OzoneVibe suggesting sim free
And yes she will do this in airplane or dnd mode
I think perhaps we should stick with making our own suggestions instead of attacking others.
But thanks for putting me right there. Im very surprised any online assistant is available in airplane mode and without a sim.
Personally, in almost 8 years, I’ve only ever needed to record the screen occasionally for some kind of tutorial/demo - not as part of my normal flights, so it’s not something that really worries me. Easy enough if I were to need it.
But let’s not all go off the OP’s topic with our individual quirks. ![]()
Hardly.
