They fucking hurt when someone flys one into your face
Cars hurt more
The death toll to this day, worldwide, still stands at…
Zero.
this argument is meaningless in the eyes of the government - we all know it sadly - the consultations we have answered to in the last years and the impact of our answers shows it all…
The vision is to have control, and that is probably not a bad thing on the long term, when drones will scourge the skies (and earth and maybe seas!).
the issue is the way this control is being established and the change affecting a population compared to the other. At the end of the day, hobbyists don’t really bring short term money, organisations do / will.
And it will all come crashing down when the first person is killled, and it wont be because of a drone
I for one will not be riding in one, will you @Andy401C
And remember this is not about drones
Cash is king
Interesting approach by the CAA - they must have spent a ton of money to get just 16 responses from a consultation on the topic of whether operators can charge and discharge batteries whilst VTOL passengers are onboard - I wonder how much money they will squander over the next 20+ years waiting for UAS air travel to become a commercially viable means of transport - seems lunacy to me. Surely it’s better to have some maverick billionaire build something, get a track record in proving it works, and then pay for the regulatory work the CAA would need to do to commercialise it. It all sounds like a solution to a problem no one has got and one the CAA hasn’t the wherewithal to refrain from engaging in at this stage.
This is the problem with creating laws like this. Without routine enforcement It becomes a form of oppression for unhappy police to use as a club to abuse someone who disagrees with them instead of a law that is used to actually protect anyone…
I had also given my own opinion before using an AI engine. It was Google Gemini 2.5 (not ChatGPT), not that it makes a huge difference.
Anyone who disagrees with remote ID please leave a on this post. I am going to write a complaint to the C.A.A. regarding this nonsense.
I would encourage anyone else to also write a complaint outlining how these new laws “Specifically RID” will put us “The Operators” at greater risk.
Use terms such as overreaching legislation, unrealistic propositions, unrealistic assumptions, distrust, failure of reasonable investigation, unfair practices, culpable negligence,
Also reference cases (with links) from the USA as failed RID implementation examples.
Where this legislation has caused operators to be assaulted or mistreated.
Where the economics of the drone industry have suffered. (reduced sales and jobs).
Where law enforcement have not had the resources or knowledge to correctly enforce the law.
Where people have easily circumvented the RID easily - 1 year ago… CAA YOUR A BUNCH OF JACKASSES
Where the FAA received large payments from corporations to enforce RID. (IE Corruption and Bribery)
Classic example of Drone Swarm Spoofing… Done by a 15 year old…
Unfortunately the CAA have intentionally cut themselves off from public opinion by having minimum contact details on their website… (coughcorruptioncough)
enquiries@caa.co.uk
DEAR CAA, NOBODY LIKES YOU. YOU ARE A BUNCH OF W******. GO BACK TO STEALING SWEETS FROM BABIES AND ROBBING GRANNIES.
SINCERELY,
EVERY SINGLE HOBBY PILOT EVER.
P.S
YOU HAVE BEEN BRIBED AND YOUR INTEGRITY IS IN QUESTION. SCUMBAGS. YOURE IN MY BLACK BOOK NOW!! REEEEEE…
The question is WHO should we write to?
It’s no longer the CAA as they have issues their views … so it it now our MP? Secretary of State responsible for the DfT?
This whole RID thing is being pushed by the Home Office
So the Home Office are forcing a separate authority to install legislation they find flawed?
Do you have any quotes that the HO is forcing this?
I’d like to have something down the line to throw into the gov’s mouth when they claim the CAA got it wrong and they “had nothing to do with it”…
I’m starting to really hate this country… Mini-Merica
I’m surprised they didn’t at least encrypt it, technically the included geographical location data is a quasi-identifier, therefore considered as PII (personally identifiable information) and regulated under GDPR.
But guaranteed the news will be encourage to call it “drone” to avoid the demand for higher legislation on that craft type…
Classic bait and switch.
Lets do the math.
(2022 Figures)
200,000 registered drones.
100,000 licensed drone pilots
I would estimate these numbers as x3 higher. Would you agree?
Average drone price: £750?
200,000 registered drones * £750 = £150,000,000
£150 million into the UK economy…
£40 million in +VAT charges.
This is money you and me will lose as our drones are not RID compliant.
Licensing Prices:
Operator ID: £11.79 every 1 year
Yearly income from licensing: £1,179,000 (2022 figures)
Insurance Prices:
£30 yearly? Fair price?
I think using uninsured road user numbers is a fair comparison.
33.2 million cars on UK roads. Uninsured each year is near 1 million
3.0120481927711%
So 3% uninsured for drones as well.
£30 * 100,000 = £3,000,000
£3,000,000 * 0.97 = £2,910,000 (To exclude uninsured flyers)
£2,910,000 Insurance paid yearly into the economy.
So that’s a £4,089,000 deficit on the UK economy each year. At a minimum!
You know they will simply hike licensing and insurance costs once less people use these services… This means any remaining flyers will be paying triple? quadruple costs?
And £150,000,000 lost on products bought by us that will end up in landfill due them being “non-compliant”
This doesn’t even account for the millions of drones already built that comply with current standards that will be wasted or left to rot.
This legislation seems to be a very costly brain rot…
Also it seems that the US is back pedaling on RID as they have realized it is both cumbersome and easily avoidable…
Hopefully I’m reading the proposals correctly.
For existing drones purchased before 1st January 2026 the requirements for Remote ID won’t come into effect until 1st January 2028 ?
Cheers Terry
I guess my point is that we are nothing compared to commercial services using drones, when they really kick up. I probably should not have written short term in the sentence
I have nothing against your estimates and your point that this is a waste of money (ours) although £4m is probably nothing in the grand scheme of things in the UK. Finally, the amount of money in the drone business is beneficial for the producer mainly (highest added value usually) and not so much for the chain (ie distributors and resellers)… so I think the real benefit is China. Which also “explains” the approach Trump has for DJI (amongst others!). This statement is not meant to start a political discussion though.
Well FWIW, just switched on my NEO and connected to my RC2 controller and one of the settings mentioned RID
When I tried to enter my valid CAA Operator ID, is came up with some error about being in the wrong format (it wasn’t, and starts GBR-OP-xxxxxxxxxxxx).
My FLIP also shows a similar option and that was detected on the OpenDroneID app on my android phone.
Note The OpenDroneID didn’t appear to detect the baby NEO for some reason.
Interesting. Going out for a flight today so will have a look. Did it just prompt/appear or just within the settings?
