Which - iMac i5 or i7 27" 5k

Nope not checked.

Your probably right. The big numbers look good in benchmarks though

Definitely worth doing before you spend on SSDs.

There’s a LOT of bits to process in that stuff you’re playing with.

I’ve already got SSDs in laptop.

Came with 256GB nvme and swapped out the 1TB drive with a 500GB sata ssd.

I have a 250gb SSD in my laptop - OS and apps only, pretty much.
1TB HDD for everything else.

Re the fusion drive, might be worth a proper geek around on the SSD sizes.

Apple’s fusion drive has a 24 GB SSD in the 1 TB model, but the 2 TB and 3 TB drives have 128 GB SSD.

The system moves files that you use most and holds them on the SSD for quicker opening.

Of course a full SSD is much better, but Apples prices are stupidly high.

I manage very well with a 256GB SSD on my MBP with a 1TB SSD used as my project drive, the rest is sat on a NAS

So … at the end of the day - I committed to this -

OS upgrade to high Sierra broke my midi interfaces but managed to resolve with a few interface updates.
Fusion drive slower than ssd in legacy Mac … but ok.
As for 4K video playback and rendering…
LOVELY . Now all that remains is a memory upgrade.

And where did you get it from?

There’s an apple reseller close to where I live. Is very much like an apple shop.

Hi @joe.k forgot to do a screenshot of the MacBook
did you bite the bullet and get an iMac ?

Screenshot 2018-10-03 at 15.48.27

Yup… I posted screen shot of new iMac setup further up this thread .

Took me an age to get Davinchi resolve working on high siera

Senior moment (holds head in shame again)
Have you updated to Mojave yet if so what do you think of it and your new toy?

The new iMac is great.
But - spent a while having to upgrade midi interfaces to get my legacy synth working again.
High siera default security features caught me out for a bit .
Now I just need to upgrade the memory.
Holding off on os upgrade for the time being.

Lots of interesting advice and I am now finalising my purchasing options.

As my computer is on the desk in our lounge I am going for a 21.5" 4K rather than the 27" 5K. I have a 21.5"at the moment at the size works well for my hobby usage.

I am going for i5 as, like Joe, I have seen a lot of comments about the i7 running hotter and being noisy - I am prepared to wait a minute or so longer rather than have the noise.

I am going for a 512SSD to improve speed (it made a massive difference when I upgraded my current model) so only decision left is whether to increase ram from 8gb to 16gb. Will these make any noticeable difference to me? there are varying views on the net. Unfortunately the 21.5" is not so easy to update RAM as the 27" as you have to take it apart to do so. The cost of increase 8 to 16gb on apple is £180 so its not a cheap option.

My main usage, apart for office apps, is Lightroom and now Davinci Resolve for video editing. Views appreciated!

I thought the 21” can be self upgraded memory wise?
Has to be done at purchase at a large fee

From all the research I have been doing the 27" has a memory compartment on the back there are 2 vacant slots where you can easily install additional RAM memory. the 21.5" doesn’t have this. To upgrade RRAM memory you have to take the computer apart.

@BrianB - I can assure you that in my rig, the i5 is well fast enough - but I did go for 27” with the Radeon Pro 580 GPU.
The 2TB fusion drive (has 128GB ssd) and once the MAC is booted up … it flys . No regrets with fusion drive. I’ve got a 750GB ssd in my old Mac which I’ll re-use.
I’ve also upgraded the memory to 40GB… very easy.
I’ve had the 21.5 “ and to be honest , it’s nice to have 27… it doesn’t take that much more real estate .

Which 21.5 inch are you going for ? I’d go for the one with the best GPU.

I’m now happily running FCP , Logic Pro and Davinchi Resolve and the performance is epic.

@BrianB. Recommend you grab the 2TB Fusion.
Reason :- 2TB fusion has 128 GB ssd built in…
1TB only has 32 GB ssd. It’s worth the extra £90
