These are probably done to death but I like to visit when I’m driving past
I’ve visited a few times with my dslr but wanted to take a drone to see a different angle, I didn’t realise quite how high the towers actually are
Stunning photos - do love going past and flying here - one day I will get my brave pants on and go inside ( have flown the drone at the bottom of the towers but not been on site ) but worried about security
These are great.
The towers I think are 119m tall if I recall from my last flight over the top of one
I’m not suggesting anyone trespasses but there’s a gate at the end of the fence which you can hop over and there’s loads of holes in the fence
I don’t think security would bother you if you’re just around the towers, I’ve never actually seen security here
yeah I know there is loads of access points and I have also never seen security there on a weekend and have seen people in the towers when I have flown from the field nextdoor
Maybe we need to reach out to someone to get full site access and clear it with the airport too and have a day there next summer to explore the site better as there is some cool bits I have seen away from the towers that are just begging for an FPV flight.
You have a new Subscriber Paul - your Angle of the North vid is awesome that Golden Hour light is spot on !
Did you need an OK from Derby ATC, as their FRZ covers some of the towers?
P.
Its easy enough to get but its also easy enough to fly all the towers really without going into the FRZ. I have flown here 3 times now and I have never been in need of contacting ATC as I have flown from the field next to the towers and had I gone into the FRZ I would defo been out of line of sight too.
So it really depends on where your planning on flying and what shots your looking at getting as to if you really need to contact them or not.
Personally if I was not flying from the farm field next to the towers then I would defo contact Derby ATC as you would be taking off from the side of the towers that the FRZ is on and you may want to get a bit of distance away from them and that would put you inside the FRZ - as they say - location - location - location
Thanks for that. A morning flight then
P.
Only one of the towers is actually in the zone
The most interesting towers are the ones which are furthest away
I just avoided that tower
Derby ATC are fine contact wise. It can all be done over the phone. Last year I had to contact them for permission to fly, but had to get them to email me as DJI wanted us to unlock the zone ( the bad old days) via the Airsafe website.
Drone hacks was your friend
It was easy enough to unlock last year. Derby Airfield gave verbal permission, so I asked them to email the permission so I could unlock it via the DJI Airsafe site. They emailed within a few minutes. But yep, a bit of a palaver. Glad they’ve changed it . Much easier talking to ATC and you can often get permission at very short notice
Here’s some of mine I took 5 yrs ago, I TOAL’d from field next to towers, I understand the farmer gets rather ranty now when people enter the field, but walking along perimeter near bushes into far corner I was totally hidden
Flown there 3 times (going through the fence). Been thrown out once by security (then we went chesterfield). Security were fine and lovely but firm. I wouldn’t fpv if wasn’t inside the fence. But sure a camera drone fine from outside
Love those pix mate
