Willington Power Station - Added to Everything Else in East Midlands

My video contribution to this forum.

I kept out of the FRZ as it was a bit of an unplanned flight. Originally I was looking for rapeseed fields and the ones I did find were just a bit meh - so though I would pop over and see what I could see and where I could fly without having to ring ATC etc.

Quite happy with the outcome.

I drove past this today and then through Findern. I was getting confused as to where to take off from as drone assist was showing FRZ to the west of the towers due to Derby Airfield. As a newby I didn’t want to take the risk.

I have added another take off and parking location on the map.

I too didn’t want to take the risk with the FRZ but to be honest unless your going to be FPV’ing around the towers and flying between them ( I think you best be on the tower land to do that so you can VOLS and recover) the location I flew from is perfect. You can get close to the towers and fly over one and keep VOLS and out of the restriction zone too. It’s perfect really.

Though it will get your heart racing for sure.

@Mattyb1975 Just ring up Derby Airfield Matt, their ATC number is in Drone Scene. They are super helpful and where willinington is they are not really bothered as most of their TOAL approaches and flights out are nearer the Toyota roundabout end. Also their air operating hours are 0600 TO 1800 HRS so they told me I don’t even have to contact them for advance authorisation unless I want it in writing (I asked for the latter for a GADC birthday comp task).

Here is the video I took: For Col’s video click here!

Would I have to deactivate the geo zone in the dji app or have dji completely got rid of all that?

Hmmm, not sure about that Matt. I flew in Willington village centre last year ( one of the birthday challenges ) Had to get permission via email off Derby Airfield ( easy and they are very helpful) Had to get this via email as DJI wanted proof of permission as part of the unlock procedure ( at that time) I don’t know if the unlock procedure for FRZ’s has changed since then.
Edit, I’ve just looked on the DJI Flysafe website, and no FRZ’s are showing up at all :open_mouth::open_mouth: Perhaps someone else can help you ? I’ve not had reason to use the unlock facility since last August.

All you’ll get now is a message with a warning that you acknowledge to cancel. DJI no longer have NFZs that you have to clear in advance.

At Willington, ring the ATC, tell them where you are and they’ll, in my experience, tell you to crack on!

@Steviegeek Never saw a soul while I was there Steve, and I parked right in front of the gates.

Matty - I didn’t see any zones or warnings while I was flying my Mini 3 Pro on Sat and I was quite close to the FRZ ( at least 50m from them ) but I was on the far end of the site ( not on the power station land - take off location has been updated on the map )

Was there on Sat - I saw 3 or 4 cars parked at the main gates but I didn’t know how to actually get onto site - I could not see a way in so just went down the road to where the farm fields start and flew from there. But I could not see anyone from any of the photos of video I took. So no idea who or there the owners of the cars were.

Would love to visit again with someone - so @Steviegeek / @D0c.Col if you fancy a tag along next time you go let me know. Safety in numbers etc LOL

Since they properly closed up the gap in the fence in the corner next to the gate to the field, entrance was through the hedge at the back of the field around here…

…unless they’ve patched that up too. They were definitely upping the security the past couple of times I was there.

But I doubt you’d get any bother if you’re not trespassing. They mainly seem to be worried about the towers falling on someone (true story).

Exactly. Last time was asked nicely to leave (even allowed to fly one more 5 min pack), just asked to leave nicely. Though they wouldn’t open the gates for us to leave, was more like “nah, you can crawl back through the hole you climbed through”, hehe!

People park there and take their dogs for a walk around there.

will check the footage I took and the photos as I did fly down towards that end of the field - looking at my pano it might still be accessible here - if I am not busy gardening this weekend I may take a trip back as its only 8 miles away from me.
