6 Times by Antony Gormley, Water of Leith, Edinburgh

Am trying out the drone to make films of public art. Today’s attempt is 6 Times by Antony Gormley.

This consists of 6 human statues, along the Water of Leith in Edinburgh. The statues are life sized casts of the artist’s own body - I find them strangely moving as they stand still withnessing human and natural activity around them. It is an interesting and beautiful journey, following them from Roseburn to the west of the city, all the way to the sea by Leith to the east. I have attempted to get a sense of the calm, contemplative tone of the sculpture, silently marking time, always there but just out of reach.

If you see something you like, leave a note to let me know.

Music credit: “Remembering Summer” by Franz Gordon, “Me and You” by Sunfish Grove and “Forever Free” by Philip Ayers.

Nicely done. Love Gormleys work. Particularly like the one standing in the river /stream with the shining on him.

Thank you so much!

I enjoyed that. Some challenging flying by the looks of the stream area. When the statues caught the sun were the best moments for me.

I enjoyed it as well; I’m another fan of Gormley and his outsidethebox thinking. The art is brilliant in it’s own right but the settings are superb for it. Contemplative, calming, and serene, but what are they thinking? what is their pain? what are they trying to say to me? how are expressionless, featureless faces and bodies so eloquent and vocal?

There was some really good close-in flying as well; must have taken a lot of concentration and my arse would have been squeaking!

Thank you! I am very much a beginner and had to spend a lot of time adjusting to low altitude flying. Quickly realised I am not as smooth at the controls as I thought i was!

That puts it very nicely - they are so enigmatic, I think that’s where their power lies.

And, yes, was quite nerve wracking flying so close to the water!

Stick it in Cine mode then change the gain/expo to smooth out the controls.

Nice shooting. Especially, as already mentioned, the ones highlighted by the sun.

I never knew about the statues and looking at their history it seems most were removed during the couple of times I’ve actually walked the WoL.

Nicely shot! I particularly liked some of the Port of Leith shots - the statue with the royal yacht in the background is a great capture. Brave to fly out there with all those gulls too - I had to bring my drone back in at that location as they were getting seriously annoyed about it

Yes, I didn’t fly there as long as I wanted to for the same reason!

Thank you!

It was in Cine, but I do need to adjust those settings a bit further. Also need to practise more, I think
