Am I about to do something stupid?

I lost my Mini yesterday.

After a lot of soul-searching last night, and some unexpected persuasion from my parents, I have decided to replace it.

Obviously there is a strong temptation to go right back to the scene with the new one,
(a) to get the pictures I was there for and
(b) to have a look on the rooftops for the old one, even though I don’t really think it’s up there.

I am concerned, even with the couple of lessons I have learned from this experience, the main problem could be that of being in a high interference area and the same thing is liable to happen again. But I don’t know if I can resist launching a search and rescue operation.

Rather than shell out imediately for a new one if you have a mate with a UAV perhaps he would have a surveillance of the area for you. Worth a go,

Was it a mini 1 or 2 that you lost?

I only ask as the interference you mentioned would be different from the 1 to the 2. Personally, I’d probably write it off and put it down to expensive experience.

It was a 1. And I see after the fact that the small outbuilding I was standing next to is probably a substation for the (currently inactive) factory behind. D’Oh!

So you not been able to wait to see if someone on FB found it etc, or even have someone go looking with another drone for it?

Noticed on your fluight logs, that the DJI fly app was 1.2.1 when 1.3 is around?

I would definately sleep on it a little more. Such a shame as it seems interferance caused the issues.

Yeah the 1, Air 1 and Spark could all be susceptible to interference. The substation may have had an impact on your compass too.

It’s god’s way of telling you to upgrade

I’ve had refurbs from dronesdirect with no issues at all so could recommend them. It might soften the blow of having to replace it.

Thanks, guys. In response to several posts…

The “Find my drone” in DJI Fly places it at the last known point, which is on a steeply pitched roof. If it landed there (and the rest of the flight data seems accurate) it would be in the street.

My phone is set to auto-update apps and neither it, nor the app itself have alerted me to a new version. In fact, it doesn’t seem to show up on the Play Store at all, and I’m pretty sure that’s where I first installed it from. Maybe not.

I don’t know anyone with a UAV that I could ask to have a look for me. Even if it was found up on the roof I suspect the retrieval would be a tall order.

I have been keeping an eye on Facebook, but I consider that an extremely long shot. Should it miraculously turn up on there I would consider it a bonus to have a spare.

I’m an impatient kind of guy. The replacement is already waiting to be picked up from Argos, although it can still be cancelled, of course. Having had to buy twice, I’m not sure I can stomach upgrading to the 2.

DJI pulled out of the Google play store quite some time ago now (have a search here, many threads on the subject) so you’ll not be alerted to new app updates anymore.

Instead, they’ve gone the very underhand route of hosting their own app and providing “in app updates”. God only knows what that app is doing in the background now with all sorts of access to your phone  And God only knows when they update components within the app, you’re not alerted to the fact.

But that’s a whole other rant :face_with_symbols_over_mouth:

Just doing that now. I can’t recall doing that in the first instance, and it was only 5 weeks ago. Oh well, I am getting on a bit and the memory’s not what it used to be.

Edit: No, I would definitely remember having to allow installations from unknown sources on my phone. Curioser and curioser.

Maybe you installed the fly app before buying the drone, and got it from the app store. I’ve just got a mini, and it’s fun but your stories scare me hah!

Definitely fun. I thought I was being careful, but it was always in the back of my mind that there is an almost constant danger of catastrophic failure when you’re dealing with things that are up in the air. So I wasn’t really surprised, it was just a lot sooner than I had hoped for.

You don’t have to look too hard around here to find plenty of sad tales of loss. It’s a fine pass-time if you have the nerve and the wallet for it.

You’ve got to get back on the horse, as they say.

Thanks Rich. I didnt realise the app had gone from Google and thought it would update its self. I was on 1.2.1 :open_mouth:. Now 1.3.1 android.

I bought a refurb mini2 from these guys and honestly I think it was new or a previously opened box.
it came in official box with seals in tact, batteries have all only had 1 charge and the drone still has all the new labels on it, just with one slight mark on it that rubbed off easily.
It could be an option for you to get the 2 instead of the 1 and save some £’s

Thanks, although as they currently only have the combo in stock it’s still a bit of a hike above the 1. I think I need to sort this out quickly and move on, or I’ll end up dithering and may end up giving up on the whole thing, and I don’t really want to do that. I’m very fortunate that I’m in a position to be able to do that this once.

Now, the big question is, do I go back and try and get the picture I was after (putting everything I’ve learned in the past 24hrs into practice). It’s looking like ideal conditions again today.

If it’s worth getting then go for it, you’re wiser this time! (although I take no responsibility if you lose your drone) It’s your choice!!

Just been looking at the location on street view, It looks like there’s a gutter that runs along the roof edge, so your drone may be in the gutter.

Yes, I thought so, too. I did go back with binoculars because I thought I saw a leg sticking out. Turned out to be a leaf.

At the end of the day, although interference may have played a part, the one responsible for this is me. Key take-aways are

  • Don’t stand right next to an electricity substation when you’re flying
  • Make sure your failsafes are set correctly
  • Make damn sure you know where your drone is and you can get eyes on it directly after fiddling about with photo/video settings
