This one is about pilot competency
Yup!
Establishing medical standards for remote pilots in the specific category.
You can see where this is going. The additional cost of submitting a medical for an OA. The DOT want to price us out of the sky and clear the 0 to 400 feet airspace for the fat cats.
I’ve said this before but if all of us I.E open and specific category flyers fail to establish a single UK organisation with the clout of the US National Rifle Association and EVERYONE of us a paid up member of it, the hobby will be dead within ten years.
I doubt we will be able to reach that level with the best will in the world. Even with their years of recognition the BMFA are no where near.
The NRA are at over 5,000,000 members
I honestly can’t see this affecting those of us with M3P’s
Copied from their thoughts and questions in the remote pilot basic certificate
“ 7.3
Demonstrate an awareness of common onboard navigation system sensors and their performance limitations including:
i. Compass
ii. Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU)
iii. Barometer iv. Pitot Tube
v. Antenna
vi. GPS Receiver
vii. DAA
“
How many drones do you know of that have “pitot tubes” on them ?
How many of us are aware of the limitations with all of the systems above ?
Sounds like they live in cloud cuckoo land tbh.
Cheers Badmanners, but does anyone here have a drone with pitot tubes on it ? I highly doubt it.
I had an airflow sensor on the Tarot 680 pro but found it a waste of time so took it off along with the optical flow sensor to save weight.
Callum made a replacement one for his at the big meet after a crash
Not myself, but some do
Amazing what you can do with some plastic tube and a camping stove.
Did the job until @njoro kindly printed me one.
Another stitch up coming our way. i can’t wait:-(
A number of my winged drones have pitot tubes, the ones running Ardupilot
Would the members flying commercially be interested in getting together to form a bit of a lobby group? Or at least to put our heads together in filling out this consultation?
If we let the big companies and the CAA do what they want I fear we will be priced out and regulation will become so onerous, only those with a legal department will manage the obstacles.
I doubt this nonsense the CAA want can be stopped, what with our PM’s enthusiasm for big tech etc, but maybe those of us trying to eek out a self-employed living and hobby flyers can have more leeway that would otherwise be the case.
Just a thought.
Not believing anything I write will change a thing I have ignored this till today. They have sent it out AGAIN so, for what’s worth, this I what I wrote. I’m posting this in case anyone here is tempted to do the same.
"None of this questionnaire is aimed at Remote Pilots so I cannot complete the above. However it’s broad aim comes across as wanting to make the
processes and rules more detailed, therefore more complicated. The result of this is to make entry harder, and easier for the established RAE’s to sit comfortably atop the market.
Since I obtained my GVC nothing from the CAA has made life easier, or cheaper. This is a shame as I, and many others, try make a business out of flying UAs we are constantly hammered by yet more regulation.
As an Operator and Remote Pilot I am expected to not only fly competently for my clients but sit on top of the pre and post flight checks and paperwork which are more extensive than for someone with a PPL, complicated servicing plans and keeping abreast of new regulation which, although written in english, is understood only by a few. Again, this being an advantage to large businesses with the spare capacity to deal with the bureaucracy.
Depressingly one has the impression the CAA would like rid of drone flyers in general and give the space over to those with vast tech budgets and big commercial applications such as Amazon’s much vaunted drone deliveries - convincing advantages of which I am yet to see here in the UK.
You asked for Stakeholders views. This is it."
