Another naughty boy - Drone pilot fined for flights near East Midlands Airport and Download Festival

BBC News - Drone pilot fined for flights near East Midlands Airport and Download Festival

500mtrs altitude inside an FRZ. And that’s just to start with.

Like that wasn’t going to go south fast

Play stupid games and win stupid prizes.

The drone I get being destroyed, but the mobile phone!?

Mess with the B̶u̶l̶l̶ CAA you get the horns.

As the phone probably had the DJI Fly app on it becomes part of the offending equipment and goes into the crusher.

Seems daft to me but I really have no overall sympathy for the bloke… definitely an Argos pilot!!

The Magistrate hit the nail on the head… “Ignorance of law is no defence whatsoever”.

If you’re going to play the game, you always have to know the rules.

Don’t knock Argos. It’s where I got my M3P from as it was the same price as from the DJI store.

Yeah but you didn’t act like a complete twat with total disregard to the law. It’s got absolutely nothing to do with the cost of a drone.

On occasion I’ve been known to, but never when flying

Some people just don’t have a clue and aren’t bothered, you can pick a drone up in loads of places so people just think they can get the drone and fly it :man_facepalming:t2:

I wish people would be bothered. It’s an aircraft. Treat it as such

That’s how you see it.

They see it as a £99 quid plastic toy from Argos.

Do I read NOTAMS. Yes
Do I have little blue A5 binders with documentation in. Yes
Do I file a flight plan. Yes
Do I stick to it. Yes. Mostly.
Do I BF the aircraft. Yes
Do I AF the aircraft. Yes

Am I overcomplicating matters. Yes a little bit but it looks good to the not we’s and those 12 years when I was dicking around with Tornado must have counted for something

I flew inside EMA FRZ last Sunday. Had permission off ATC to do so though :wink: Very strange flying the drone and seeing aircraft 2000 ft above the drone.

He also asked for 13 other drone-related offences to be taken into consideration

At least he decided to make a clean breast of it

It’s what those other 13 offences were we need to ask. Technology has moved on a little since JAFSOO (Just Another F**king Sex Obsessed Observer) got sent to the poky.

Idiot. Broke all the rules. Get us all shut down

Surely he needed the FRZ to be unlocked? How did DJI approve that, unless it was hacked. If it was then he was clearly aware of the rules.

He had also flown at a height of 1,640ft (500m), more than four times the legal height limit of 400ft (122m), meaning there was a greater risk of endangering aircraft.

:scream:

I thought it was bad enough that he was just flying in the FRZ, and then I saw the height…

He was new to the hobby and didn’t know the rules - but he knew how to over-ride the DJI geo-fence?

Living in the area and working at the airport I cant believe the carrot took off from Western it bloody miles away from the racetrack were download is held. Further more I no expert but how did he get into EMA airspace ?? I tested this for myself and my mini wouldn’t even leave the ground :man_shrugging:t3:

That said the same happened last year also, I was at work when they closed the runway because some muppet flew a drone over the fence line…
