I presume I’ll have to fit one next year to my Mini 4K?
This will presumably take my drone to over 249g.. I’m more confused at what category it will fit in then.

Your Mini 4k will have RID built in - I know there are sites that seem to suggest it does not as its not a requirement in the US for sub 250g drones to have it but the DJI site says it does have it
So no need to worry.

MMM also having a look on that site there is a bit of a contradiction - see the table in point 30 - but I think this is just badly worded as it seems to suggest firmware is not supported but further down its hardware that is supported - so don’t get too hung up on it.

Is access to it (you have to fill in details apparently when the time comes - next year I think?) hidden somewhere in the Fly app?

From what others have said it seems to be a geo enabled thing so an update to the firmware closer to the time will enable it or if you go to a country that needs it then it will show.
I believe on some of the models just adding the larger battery also seems to enable it.
But for now worry not - and who knows what the rules will be come 2028

Just so I understand. You don’t need it currently but you may need it next year?
That is the way I understand it. I will be flying my mini2 on a holiday in the UK in April and didn’t think I needed to worry.
Yes that’s right - no need to worry till the start of 2028 unless you buy a drone that has a UK class mark on it - but any legacy or C class ( EU Class) drone it won’t be enforced till the start of 2028

haha - Chris have you seen that DJI page I shared - man how confusing is that - its like the hokie pokey - in out shake it about haha - so much conflicting info on what drones do or don’t have it or will or will not support it even from DJI.
