I know English Heritage manages the site (I’m aware of their usual no drone BS), I’m asking if anyone has found a suitable TOAL point close enough to permit a flight with a sub 250g keeping VLOS.
I flew around the abbey about a year ago. Entrance to the abbey was closed either due to covid or the time of year so I parked in the small visitor car park there. Refer to Google maps.
I TOAL in front of the abbey on the quiet access road that passes the abbey. The only thing to watch out for are the trees to the East side!
Another location to consider is Bylands Abbey which is only 9 miles away. This is an EH site also but the grounds are free to enter during daylight hours. There is a small car parking area opposite the abbey. Again TOAL is ok from the quiet access road that passes the abbey.
The only attention I received in both locations were interested dog walkers / hikers.
Hope this helps.
Thanks Chris. Obviously the car parks will be EH property so appreciate the heads up re the access roads.
Sounds like you’ve been lucky on the day you flew with no staff being around. I was there a few years ago & there was a few ground staff hanging about. I think it’s closed on Tuesdays so that might be the day to go
I was there flying earlier this summer (it was open). As well as the EH property, there’s a very quiet road that runs in front and what seems to be wasteland that’s used as another car park. I certainly didn’t run into any problems.
